Met at in 2010. During the years, we'd go to the conferences each year and have breakfast or dinner to catch up. Note: We never hung out where we live in the DC area.
We hadn't sat and talked in person anywhere since 2019. Decided to fix that and did that today.

Next Gen Radio has a new story theme.
Last month, our managing and digital editors and I convened via Zoom and were led through a design thinking exercise by Next Gen alumna Kuo, now VP for Content at PRX.

We settled on six broad ideas.
We voted for "Moments of Truth."

We'll ask our reporters to find a source who could capture a moment in their lives when clarity of purpose was revealed. When did the subject discover something new about themselves, their community, or their understanding of the world, and explain how that changed their life?
We will begin exploring this theme when Next Gen returns in February 2025 and with our 4th project with Oregon Public Broadcasting

A special thank you to Next Gen Editorial Illustration team member for raising your hand and creating this illustration so quickly.

Advise her on how to make one. She does. Suddenly, everyone around the bar has one, poured perfectly.
Next Gen Early-Career alumna and now Boston Globe reporter (pictured) has one as well.

Very timely conference. We The People coming together to talk, share, and learn from each other. I'll be emcee for the Medal of Honor ceremony where OG Mentee, Public Radio Host, nationally known speaker, and published author will be recognized. Also, I'll be leading a discussion Saturday, titled, "The World is One Country and We are its Citizens: Connecting through Media."

You know when you are meticulously digging through FAR too many digital folders, looking for that ONE thing and you suprisingly find something else? No? 🤓

Well.....
This photo was taken exactly 10 years ago this coming weekend. I think I took it.
Back story:
Next Generation Radio was reborn in 2013, having been on hiatus since 2009.
In 2014, we ended that year with our second project, and it was at the annual Collegiate Broadcasters conference, which was held then in Seattle. Thanks to support from KUOW Public Radio and my good friend and colleague Arvid Hokanson, we selected seven current or recently graduated college students (one came all the way from Puerto Rico, Alyssa A. Mendez) and we brought them to the conference.

In the photo, left to right: Nancy DeVille, Ann Kane, Gabriela Saldivia, Reynaldo Leaños Jr., Alyssa A. Mendez, Constanza Gallrado (Coco) and Imana Gunawan.

For a few years, I've been doing this series called "OG Mentee" (h/t Juleyka Lantigua for coining the term). I define it as someone having been regularly coached/mentored guided by me/us for a minimum of 10 years. I'll note from this group, Rey and Imana have returned a few times to be a mentor, Aly mentored on our Chicago project last year and Gabriela, in particular, has ascended to our Managing Editor role, having lead several of our five-day digital sprints.

Now, here n October 2024:
Nancy is a Podcast and Special Projects Manager for "The Atlantic."
Ann is a podcast producer in Atlanta.
Gabriela lives in Spain and is a freelance producer and editor.
Rey is now a producer for "Latino USA/Futuro Media" and based in New York City.
Aly is a digital producer for Telemundo Chicago.
Coco is in Miami and a Managing Producer for Pushkin.
Imana is in New York City, having just finished an MPS at the Fashion Institute of New York and is now a freelance producer/coordinator.

Once upon a time, I had the bright idea of doing Next Gen Radio radio projects in Austin, TX, AND during SXSW. Brilliant, right? 😉Austin (and SXSW) were a lot smaller back then. "Twitter" launched at SXSW during our third project there in 2007. What the hell was a "Twitter?" Microblogging? Get off my lawn.

20 years later, we're still going in Texas. A few of our alumni from these Texas projects: Rachel Osier Lindley Erika Aguilar, Claudia Hernández, Estefanía de León, Jan Ross Piedad, Patricia Lim, Thalía Guzmán, Dani Matias Jerry Quijano, Tiana Woodard and Colleen DeGuzman
Now, we welcome these six rising journalists and media makers to our community for the 2024 Next Gen-Texas Newsroom program.

We are the Next Generation OF Radio

Some history: Next Gen was named in 2000 by me, because I could. I was producing a news-magazine at NPR so the training was at first, a side hustle. We were shooting video, photos and producing stories for web-based streaming long before it because what it is today. I was using iMovie when it first came out so I could shoot, edit and post video files of my then boss, talking about how to pitch a story or one of our engineers talking about how to get good sound. Back then, there was no YouTube, Twitter or Snapchat. Facebook was for students-only. There was no universal broadband, WiFi was beginning to take off and yet, we were what they now call "digital-first." NPR stations were extremely hesitant to put any student work on the air. So, we built sites on each location, I brought in an NPR staffer who knew how to build sites (even tho' it wasn't her day-job) and our approach to student training was born.

I like to brag about our program alumni so here are a few:

Lee Hill, Director, Content Strategy, New York Public

Christina Stella, Producer, Nebraska Public Radio, Lincoln, Neb
