Al Neuharth Free Spirit and Journalism Conference

Al Neuharth Free Spirit and Journalism Conference The annual Al Neuharth Free Spirit and Journalism Conference for high school juniors hosts the top high school journalists from around the country each year.

The purpose of the Al Neuharth Free Spirit and Journalism Conference is to promote the vital role of the First Amendment as a cornerstone of democracy, and to inspire students to pursue journalism careers. In a competitive selection process, 51 high school students, one from each state and D.C. are welcomed by the Freedom Forum to in-person journalism panels and activities including tours of newsr

ooms and studios, as well visits to the U.S. Capitol and other landmarks in Washington, D.C. Students selected for the program receive an all-expenses-paid trip and a $1,000 scholarship to the college of their choice. The program was established in 1999 to honor Al Neuharth, founder of The Freedom Forum and USA TODAY. The conference is designed to inspire and encourage students to pursue journalism. Today there are more than 1,500 “Free Spirits” including journalists working for The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Baltimore Sun, ESPN and network-affiliated TV stations.

The Al Neuharth Free Spirit and Journalism Conference website features testimonials from alumni about the impact the program had on them.

"The Free Spirit conference showed me what was possible in journalism,” says Abha Bhattarai, from the Class of 2004, now Economics Correspondent at The Washington Post. “It was my first glimpse into the world of real-life reporters and confirmed that my passions — uncovering stories, talking with people, and writing — could become a career. The week in Washington, D.C. was exhilarating, and I left feeling certain that I wanted to be a journalist.”

Every year at the Al Neuharth Free Spirit and Journalism Conference, students represent their home states.
So it's always neat to see when alumni return home to make an impact in their community.
Kacie Yamamoto, who represented Hawaii in the class of 2018, is now at the Honolulu Star-Advertiser after graduating from USC in the spring.
It's just one of many examples of Free Spirit alumni pursuing journalism careers, some of them back where it all began!

Congrats to 2023 Free Spirit Talvin Dhingra!

A reporter at The Graphic (Amherst Regional High School, Massachusetts), Talvin was recognized as a finalist for the 2023 Student Freedom of Information Award at this year’s National High School Journalism Convention, for his outstanding public records reporting.

His adviser, Sara Barber-Just, and his team used public records to support powerful stories about transphobia and anti-LGBTQ+ behavior by students and staff at the local middle school as well as broader management issues within the school district. Their reporting led to multiple staff being placed on leave during a Title IX investigation.

We applaud Talvin and his team for his work to foster the First Amendment and student press rights! 👏

This week, we got to see a number of 2023 Free Spirits at this year's Journalism Education Association (JEA) / National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA) Fall National High School Journalism Convention in Boston!

We connected with hundreds of high school journalists and their advisers, and the biggest takeaway from the week was that JOURNALISM MATTERS, now more than ever.

"Although the differences among us were quite evident, they were often overshadowed by our similar lived experiences as student journalists. Whether through censorship of content or restrictions on their ability to spotlight injustice in their respective schools, each of my classmates recounted moments when they felt as though their voice was not heard.

As I listened to their experiences, the importance of maintaining student press freedoms became clear to me."

“A news industry that has been shedding jobs as long as they’ve been alive, and the risk of harassment when their work strikes nerves hasn’t dimmed the enthusiasm of many college students — often unpaid — who are keeping the flame alive with noteworthy journalism.”

Many of our Al Neuharth Free Spirit and Journalism Conference scholars are editors their high school papers, then go on to serve as leaders in their college publications.

It’s great to see growing recognition of the impact that student journalists can have!

Have you heard of the News Literacy Project? It’s a nonprofit dedicated to spreading news literacy and helping to fight misinformation. Last month, it received a big honor from the Library of Congress (see below).
Katie Aberbach from the Free Spirit class of 2000 is the senior marketing manager at the News Literacy Project.
We love to see the many ways Free Spirit alumni are carrying on the legacy of Al Neuharth through their work in journalism and beyond.

The News Literacy Project has received the highest honor from the Library of Congress Literacy Awards Program, the David M. Rubenstein Prize.

With the end of the writer’s strike in the news, we thought we’d highlight a Free Spirit alumn who’s doing exciting work in television.
Josh Sundquist, part of the very first class of Free Spirits in 2000, is Executive Producer and
writer of “Best Foot Forward,” a family comedy inspired by his childhood.
Sundquist, a comedian, Paralympian, and author, lost his left leg at age nine, and wrote his
memoir, “Just Don’t Fall: How I Grew Up, Conquered Illness, and Made it Down the Mountain,” in 2010.
You can read more about Sundquist’s work to prioritize disability representation both
onscreen and behind-the-scenes here:

The Apple TV+ series, based loosely on a memoir by Josh Sundquist, prioritized disability representation on both sides of the camera.
