Israel has recognized Somaliland as an independent and sovereign state.

The agreement, described as being “in the spirit of the Abraham Accords,” includes several strategic and diplomatic developments:

Benjamin Netanyahu and Somaliland’s President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi signed a declaration to establish full diplomatic ties.

Reports indicate that Israel is in talks to establish a military base in Somaliland to serve as a forward platform for monitoring the Bab al-Mandab Strait and conducting intelligence or direct operations against the Yemeni resistance.

The move has been condemned by Somalia as a “deliberate attack” on its sovereignty. Egypt, Turkey, Jordan, Qatar, and Djibouti, as well as the African Union and the Arab League, have rejected the recognition.

Yemen’s resistance warned that any Israeli military presence in Somaliland would be considered a “military target”. Al-Shabaab vowed to fight against any Israeli use of the territory.

On Sunday, December 28, 2025, the far-right Otzma Yehudit (Jewish Power) party, led by National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, announced new legislation to strictly regulate and restrict the Muslim call to prayer (adhan) from mosques.

The proposed bill, introduced by Tzvika Fogel (chair of the Knesset’s National Security Committee), would replace existing police directives with a formal legal framework:

The use of loudspeakers in mosques would be prohibited unless the state grants a specific license. These permits now require a “careful examination”.

Licensing would be based on state-defined criteria, including sound volume, noise-reduction measures, a mosque’s location, and its proximity to residential areas.

Police would be granted broad authority to immediately shut down sound systems or confiscate equipment if permit conditions are breached.

Operating a loudspeaker without a permit could result in a fine of $15,700, while violating permit conditions would carry a $3150 fine.

Hamas has released a 42-page political document titled “Our Narrative... Operation Aqsa Flood: Two Years of Steadfastness and the Will for Liberation,” in which it formally challenged Israel to allow an “impartial international investigation” into the events of October 7, 2023.

Hamas called for an independent international inquiry—possibly through the International Criminal Court (ICC)—to investigate claims of civilian deaths on October 7, while simultaneously demanding a parallel investigation into Israeli crimes committed against Palestinians in Gaza.

The document denies core allegations, asserting that Hamas fighters did not systematically target civilians, kill children, or commit sexual violence. It attributes many civilian casualties to Israel’s own military responses, specifically citing the “Hannibal Directive”.

Prominent Israel lobby groups and UK political figures are calling for the British citizenship of Egyptian-British activist Alaa Abd el-Fattah to be revoked.

The controversy follows Abd el-Fattah’s arrival in the UK on Boxing Day after his release from an Egyptian prison, where he had been detained since 2019. Shortly after his arrival, social media posts dating back to 2010 and 2012 emerged in which he appeared to advocate for resistance against Israel.

The Board of Deputies of British Jews and the Jewish Leadership Council have condemned the “effusive welcome” given to Abd el-Fattah by the UK government. The Board of Deputies stated there is an “urgent need” to determine if he still holds these “extremist and violent” views, which they described as threatening to British Jews.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer originally expressed his “delight” at Abd el-Fattah’s return, but Downing Street later clarified he was unaware of the “abhorrent” social media posts at the time.

Israeli occupation forces took five Syrian youths captive from the Daraa governorate who were foraging for wild mushrooms near the town of Kodna in the southern countryside of Quneitra.

The youths were searching for seasonal wild mushrooms, a vital food and income source often called “the meat of the poor,” on agricultural land near the Kudna (Kodna) dam.

Local sources identified four of the five youths as residents of Jasim in northern Daraa: Mahmoud Ahmad al-Salkhadi, Dawoud Suleiman al-Salkhadi, Mohammad Ahmad al-Salkhadi, and Abdul Basit Suleiman al-Salkhadi.

Following their “arrest,” the detainees were reportedly transferred to the Tel al-Ahmar al-Gharbi military base.

Seven United Nations human rights experts released a statement expressing “grave concern” for the lives and fundamental rights of eight activists affiliated with Palestine Action who have been on hunger strike in UK prisons since November 2, 2025.

The experts warned that the detainees are at “critical risk” of irreversible organ failure, neurological damage, and death after more than seven weeks without food.

The rapporteurs highlighted reports of delayed access to emergency healthcare, a lack of consistent medical oversight, and the use of excessive restraints, such as shackling, while strikers were hospitalized. They emphasized that the state’s duty of care is “heightened, not diminished” when individuals are on hunger strike.

The experts questioned the UK’s proscription of Palestine Action under the Terrorism Act 2000. They argued that the definition of terrorism is being applied too broadly to acts of property damage and political protest that do not involve serious injury or death.

Serious concern was raised regarding the use of lengthy pre-trial remand, with some activists scheduled to remain in custody for up to two years before their trials in 2027.

The experts noted allegations of censorship of communications, restricted access to lawyers and families, and hostile treatment by guards who reportedly labeled the detainees as “terrorists”.

As of December 28, 2025, reports indicate that Israel has committed at least 969 ceasefire violations during the 80 days since the truce began on October 10, 2025.

According to the Government Media Office in Gaza, the violations have led to the deaths of 418 Palestinians and injuries to 1,141 others.

Documented breaches include 298 incidents of direct gunfire at civilians, 54 military incursions into residential areas, and 455 bombing or targeting operations. Additionally, 162 acts of destruction targeting homes and institutions were reported.

Only 19,764 aid trucks entered Gaza out of the 48,000 required by the agreement (42% compliance rate).

Only 425 fuel trucks entered out of the 4,000 stipulated, representing a 10% compliance rate that has left essential facilities like hospitals and water stations near collapse.

The media office reported that Israel has blocked the entry of tents and mobile homes, leaving over 1.5 million displaced people without adequate protection during severe winter storms.

In 2025, official government figures revealed that terrorism-related arrests in the UK surged by 660% year-on-year, primarily due to the proscription of the activist group Palestine Action.

In 2025, there were 1,886 terrorism-related arrests, compared to 248 in the previous year. Of these, 1,630 (86%) were linked specifically to supporting Palestine Action.

The vast majority of arrests (1,706) occurred between July and September 2025, representing a 2,608% increase over the previous quarter following the ban on July 5.

On December 18, 2025, dozens of far-right Israeli activists breached the Gaza border at multiple locations to hold symbolic flag-raising ceremonies, calling for the re-establishment of Jewish colonies in the Palestinian territory.

Two groups from the Nachala settlement movement successfully entered the Gaza Strip. One group drove several hundred meters into central Gaza to the ruins of Kfar Darom, a settlement evacuated in 2005. A second group reportedly raised a flag near the site of the former Morag settlement in southern Gaza.

The groups included men, women, and young children. They were part of an event titled “Raising the Flag in Gaza,” timed to coincide with the fifth night of Hanukkah.

The United States government imposed sanctions on two additional judges of the International Criminal Court (ICC) in response to the court’s ongoing investigation into Israeli war crimes in Gaza.

The sanctions target two judges from the ICC’s Appeals Chamber:

Gocha Lordkipanidze (Georgia)

Erdenebalsuren Damdin (Mongolia)

Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated the judges were designated for their role in the “illegitimate targeting of Israel”.

Specifically, they were penalized for voting in the majority to reject Israel’s appeal on December 15, 2025, which sought to halt the investigation and cancel arrest warrants for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.

It was revealed that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is the secret buyer behind a $2.3 billion defense contract with Israeli defense giant Elbit Systems—the largest deal in the company’s history.

When the deal was first announced in November 2025, Elbit only identified the customer as a “confidential international client” at the buyer’s request. The identity of the UAE was first reported by the French outlet Intelligence Online on December 15, 2025.

The deal reportedly involves a large-scale, upgraded version of Elbit’s J-MUSIC DIRCM (Directional Infrared Counter Measures). This is an advanced laser-based system designed to protect civil and military aircraft by disabling the sensors of incoming surface-to-air missiles.

This is the second-largest Israeli arms export deal ever, surpassed only by the $3.5 billion sale of the Arrow-3 system to Germany in 2023. This marks the first major defense contract signed by an Arab country with an Israeli contractor since October 7, 2023.
