Popular Nigerian singer, Crown Uzama, aka Shallipopi, has revealed that his stage name was inspired by the 1994 Chinese kung fu comedy film, Shaolin Popey.

Speaking in a recent interview with our correspondence, the singer disclosed that he attempted using his birth name, Crown, and nicknames like Drip Face as stage name before finally settling for Shallipopi.

He explained that he stumbled across the movie by accident while growing up, stressing that his mum bought a Tom And Jerry CD for them but it turned out to be the movie Shaolin Popey when they inserted it in their DVD player

Nigerian awards not credible, worse than Grammys – Timaya

Nigerian singer, Inetimi Alfred Timaya Odon, simply known as Timaya, has claimed that Nigerian awards lack credibility.

some Nigerians have accused the Grammy organisers of complicity after the Recording Academy snubbed all the Nigerian nominees at the 66th Grammys, with Tyla, the only non-Nigerian nominee in the maiden Best African Music Performance category, winning the award.

Reacting during a recent interview, Timaya said Nigerian awards are even worse than the Grammys in terms of credibility.

Though he was asked, “What is your take on a lot of people saying the Grammy used Afrobeats and we need to come back home and grow?”

Timaya replied, “We don’t need to come back home. Even our own, which credible awards? Is it the Hip-hop awards, Hip TV awards [The Headies]? I don’t even know. They are not credible either. They are even worse than the Grammys.

“If we have a homegrown award that is credible, people would gravitate towards it. But for now, whether you like it or not, Grammy is still Grammy. We don’t have to back down [because Nigerian artists lost this year]. We are going again.”

Nigerian Afrobeats singer Davido has stated that being nominated for the just concluded 66th edition of the Grammys Awards is enough to make him proud of himself.

2024 Grammy Awards was held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on Sunday.

Davido, who is a first time Grammy nominee, failed to secure any of the three categories he was nominated for, as all Nigerian nominees lost out.

Kcee blasts Harrysong over claims of writing his hit songs.

Singer and co-founder of Five Star Music, Kingsley Okonkwo, aka Kcee, has lambasted his former signee, Harrysong, for claiming he wrote most of his hit songs while he was signed to the label.

Harrysong has continuously called out Kcee and his brother and business partner, E-Money, over allegations of holding his musical rights.

He also claimed he wrote most of the ‘Limpopo’ crooner’s hit songs.

However, reacting in the latest episode of the Afrobeats podcast, Kcee said Harrysong was still in the village with his grandmother when he won Star Quest talent show with his former partner, Presh, and got signed to Kennis Music where they released three albums.

He pointed out that it has been eight years since Harrysong left Five Star Music and he is still producing hits without him in the label.

I started my career as DJ’ – Kcee

Popular Nigerian singer Kingsley Okonkwo, aka Kcee, has revealed that he started his career as a disc jockey.

Speaking in the latest episode of the Afrobeats Podcast, the ‘Limpopo’ crooner said he and his brother and co-founder of Five Star Music, Emeka Okonkwo, aka E-Money, were disc jockeys before switching careers.

He said: “My father was a DJ, a record seller. I grew up in a home where my father sold records. So all the old-school artists, I know them [their music]. I was selling their records when I was about 5 or 6 years old.

"When I was in secondary school, I was already handling a full record store and playing at parties. I and E-Money were DJs. So, I listened to a lot of artists.”

He credited his father with shaping his music career.

Kcee said the secret to his longevity in the music industry is his “ear for a hit song.”

Nigerian Afrobeats singer, Joseph Akinfenwa Donus, popularly known as Joeboy, has parted ways with Empawa Music, which is owned by Mr Eazi.

The singer signed a dual deal with global music giant, Warner Music. The dual deal sees Joeboy launch his record label called Young Legend as well as being Warner Music’s latest flagship artist.

BNXN asked to be taken off my song – CKay

Nigerian singer CKay has shed more light on his collaboration saga with colleague, BNXN, fka Buju.

Speaking in a recent interview with press in Lagos, CKay stated that his 2023 hit song, ‘Hallelujah’ originally featured Seyi Vibez and BNXN but it was a version with Blaqbonez that was eventually released.

He explained that BNXN requested to be taken off from the song while Seyi Vibez’s management failed to clear up his verse.

“One thing I can tell you is that BNXN asked to be taken off the record [‘Hallelujah’]. Why he asked to be taken off the record is a question you will have to ask him,” he said.
