Introduction
The Tigray Media Watch Digital Intelligence Monitoring Group has conducted an extensive investigation into the illegal gold mining operations wreaking havoc in the Zana and Adite districts of Tigray. Spearheaded by a criminal network led by General Megebe Haile and Aleme Geberewahed, these operations have caused irreversible environmental damage, ignited a public health crisis, and inflicted severe human rights violations upon the local communities.

This report provides a comprehensive overview of the crisis, substantiates the claims with evidence, and appeals for immediate action from international environmental and human rights organizations to halt these destructive activities and hold the perpetrators accountable.

Key Findings
1. Environmental Devastation
Illegal mining operations in Zana and Adite rely on hazardous chemicals, such as mercury and cyanide, causing widespread environmental harm:

Water Contamination: Mercury and cyanide are being discharged into rivers and streams, poisoning water sources critical for human consumption, livestock, and wildlife.
Soil Degradation: Toxic chemicals have seeped into farmlands, leaving them barren and disrupting the agricultural economy.
Public Health Crisis: Villagers face severe health issues, including neurological disorders, respiratory illnesses, and congenital disabilities due to prolonged exposure to these chemicals.
2. Human Rights Violations
The illegal mining operations are characterized by systematic abuse of the local population:

Violence and Intimidation: Communities resisting the destruction of their environment face physical assaults, threats, and imprisonment at the behest of General Megebe Haile.
Forced Displacement: Families have been evicted from their ancestral lands to accommodate mining activities.
Arbitrary Detentions and Torture: Youths opposing the operations have been detained without due process, with many reporting torture while in custody.
3. Economic Exploitation
The illegal gold trade benefits a criminal syndicate while impoverishing the local populace:

Organized Crime Network: General Megebe Haile and Aleme Geberewahed have monopolized illegal mining and smuggling, exploiting Tigray’s resources for personal gain.
Collusion with Foreign Actors: Chinese criminal organizations are providing advanced equipment, further intensifying the exploitation.
Destruction of Livelihoods: The dismantling of the farming economy has left families destitute and dependent.
4. Betrayal of Trust
General Megebe Haile and Aleme Geberewahed, once celebrated heroes of Tigray’s resistance, have turned against their own people, symbolizing betrayal of their community’s trust and values.

Evidence Gathered
Satellite Imagery: High-resolution images reveal deforestation, polluted waterways, and the unchecked expansion of mining activities.
Eyewitness Accounts: Local villagers have provided detailed testimonies of environmental destruction, forced evictions, and violent suppression.
Medical Reports: Clinics in the region report alarming spikes in illnesses linked to mercury and cyanide poisoning.
Photographic Evidence: On-the-ground photographs document heavy machinery, polluted landscapes, and victims of violence and poisoning.
Appeal to International Organizations
We urge international environmental and human rights organizations to take the following actions:

Investigate Violations: Launch independent investigations into environmental crimes and human rights abuses in Zana and Adite.
Impose Sanctions: Freeze the assets of General Megebe Haile, Aleme Geberewahed, and their associates, and impose travel bans.
Provide Humanitarian Aid: Deliver immediate assistance, including clean water, medical care, and economic relief, to affected communities.
Demand Justice: Pressure the Tigray Interim Government to dismantle illegal mining operations and prosecute those responsible.
Rehabilitate the Environment: Collaborate with local authorities to restore contaminated land and water sources and prevent future destruction.
Conclusion
The people of Zana and Adite are enduring an environmental and humanitarian catastrophe that threatens their survival and dignity. Once fertile lands have been reduced to toxic wastelands, and the social fabric of the community is unraveling under the weight of corruption and violence.

This is not merely an environmental crisis; it is a moral tragedy that demands immediate and decisive action. The international community must stand with the people of Tigray to safeguard their rights, protect their environment, and restore their hope for a sustainable future.
