For over 80 years, USAGM networks have been a trusted, independent source of unbiased journalism to 420 million people worldwide. But how do these networks maintain their editorial independence?

A cornerstone mission of the bipartisan International Broadcasting Advisory Board (IBAB) is supporting the editorial independence of each of the networks. In addition, there are legislative and legal safeguards as well as independent boards in place at each of the USAGM grantees.

Both USAGM and the IBAB are actively strengthening these protections and reinforcing editorial freedom to ensure the credibility of the award-winning reporting USAGM networks are known for.

Networks across USAGM share America's story. VOA's Charter underscores this commitment: "VOA will represent America as a whole, not any single segment of its society, and will present a balanced and comprehensive portrayal of significant American ideas and institutions."

VOA Persian reporter Kevin Tavana interviews many members of the U.S. Congress, from both sides of the aisle, to provide balanced coverage on topics to the network's Farsi-language audience.

Joe Kawly, a journalist for MBN's Alhurra, is a trusted voice for the network's audience of over 34 million across the Middle East.

He shares a valuable tip as we close the year: "The secret to connecting with your audience isn’t perfection—it’s authenticity. Whether in a newsroom or on a stage, people resonate with the real you, not the polished version you think they want. It’s not about being flawless; it’s about being relatable. Speak as yourself, not as ‘a persona’ that you copied from somewhere else on TV. That’s where trust and connection are built. Your truth resonates louder than any script ever will."

Congratulations to the journalists at OCB's Martí Noticias on winning THREE awards at the 2024 NATAS Suncoast Chapter Emmy Awards!

“This year’s wins mark a historic achievement. This is the first time that journalists who work and live within the repressive Cuban regime have shared the recognition alongside their U.S.-based OCB colleagues. These awards are truly the result of extraordinary teamwork that supersedes physical barriers and international borders.”
- OCB Director Sylvia Rosabal

Threats to press are threats to human rights.

Journalists across USAGM networks continue to be persecuted for their commitment to reporting the truth. Twenty have been killed in the line of duty. More have been harassed, jailed, or threatened.

Today, we spotlight the USAGM network journalists who are still behind bars or missing for their commitment to fighting censorship and supporting the free flow of information.

As technology continues to rapidly change, journalists need to stay up to date with the latest developments and understand the ways it can be used to continue USAGM's goal of sharing news all over the world.

Last month, MBN's leadership team attended the 2024 Global Media Congress at ADNEC Centre Abu Dhabi. With this year's theme being 'Shaping Future Media', the conference highlighted pressing topics in the media industry such as digital communication, artificial intelligence, advanced technologies, and innovation in the media sector.

What's it like working as a journalist at the White House?

Because a crucial part of VOA's mission is telling America's story across the world, VOA Spanish journalist Julia Riera spent a day covering the White House over the summer as the U.S. Presidential election season unfolded. She captured a behind-the-scenes look at her day providing coverage to affiliates across Latin America on a critical part of our democratic election process.
