Since 1960, VOA has been reporting news and information to 22 francophone countries in sub-Saharan Africa with an alternative to state-owned and/or supported media that dominate the airwaves in many of these countries. Although independent radio and television stations are making some advances, many remain subject to government interference.

VOA French to Africa reporter André Ndambi reported from the United States Embassy in the Democratic Republic of Congo on Election Night 🇺🇸.

On January 17, 2016, VOA contributor Almigdad Mojalli was tragically killed in a Saudi-led coalition airstrike near Sana’a while documenting the aftermath of another attack on civilians.

Mojalli was one of the few Yemeni journalists working with international media. Despite threats and personal loss, he continued to shed light on Yemen’s humanitarian crisis, ensuring the world saw the stories of those affected by war.

Today, we honor his bravery, resilience, and commitment to truth.

Today, we remember VOA Deewa Radio reporter Mukarram Khan Aatif, who was tragically killed on January 17, 2012, for his fearless reporting.

Aatif dedicated his life to uncovering the truth, even in the face of constant threats from militants in Pakistan’s FATA region. His courage cost him his life, but his legacy as a defender of press freedom lives on.

We honor his sacrifice and stand in solidarity with all who risk everything to report the truth.

For over 80 years, USAGM networks have been a trusted, independent source of unbiased journalism to 420 million people worldwide. But how do these networks maintain their editorial independence?

A cornerstone mission of the bipartisan International Broadcasting Advisory Board (IBAB) is supporting the editorial independence of each of the networks. In addition, there are legislative and legal safeguards as well as independent boards in place at each of the USAGM grantees.

Both USAGM and the IBAB are actively strengthening these protections and reinforcing editorial freedom to ensure the credibility of the award-winning reporting USAGM networks are known for.
