Tired of trying to get more social media followers just to prove yourself as an author?
Last week I met an author who wanted to publish a book about his time as a marriage and family therapist. Oh the stories he collected over the years, and not to mention the wisdom that could really make a difference. Advice that he believes could be what the world needs to hear in these harrowing times.
When he first started his publishing pursuit, he was told that if he ever wanted to have success as a published author, he’d need to develop his author platform a bit more. Get more followers, create an author website, and start an email list.
“I’ve been posting for almost a year straight now,” he said, clearly exhausted. “What gives? When do the followers suddenly appear?”
You’re probably wondering the same thing, aren’t you?
And is it really just about numbers? Are there publishers out there who simply don’t care, and look for other factors, such as the quality of your writing or the uniqueness of your book idea?
And what about your author website? Or an email list? Should you be blogging, or will that turn out to be another fruitless pursuit, just like social media? If you’re strapped for time like most others, is it even worth it to try?
Yeah, we get it. Growing your author platform can be so frustratingly annoying. All that time spent only to receive little in return.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by questions like these, you won’t want to miss our upcoming Ask Me Anything with literary veteran Dr. Angela Lauria, where she’ll answer your questions about creating an author platform!

Do you really need a large following in order to get a book deal?
For as long as she could remember, people told Anissa she could write well. Not just that, but she had the life experience to back it up, given her years of experience as a marriage and family lawyer.
“Come on,” they’d beg, “just write a book already!”
And honestly, deep down, she knew she had the writing chops to do so. Even after law school tried to change her writing style, she stuck to it, writing in her journal every evening and taking pride in her marketing emails.
So when the time came to finally write that book the world seemed to want from her so badly, the script felt like it suddenly changed.
“Sure, you can write, but do you have a big enough following?”
Hold up. Pause.
A following?
Anissa thought all it took to write a bestseller was to be, well… good at writing? If her writing was truly as spectacular as she believed it was—as the world said it was—wouldn’t that suffice?
We have seen this issue time and time again. That's why we're thrilled to invite you to our upcoming Ask Me Anything with publishing expert and founder of Difference Press, Dr. Angela Lauria!
