On this National Pi Day, we recognize the brilliant contributions of Black women in mathematics, starting with D.C.’s very own Dr. Martha Euphemia Lofton Haynes, the first Black woman to earn a Ph.D. in mathematics.

We also honor other trailblazers who paved the way in STEM:

🔢 Evelyn Boyd Granville – One of the first Black women to earn a Ph.D. in mathematics and a pioneer in NASA’s space programs.
🔢 Gloria Ford Gilmer – Mathematician and ethnomathematics researcher who explored the cultural connections in mathematics.
🔢 Vivienne Malone-Mayes – Advocate for diversity in mathematics and one of the first Black women to earn a Ph.D. in the field.

Their contributions continue to inspire future generations in STEM. Who are the mathematicians that inspire you?
