SAVE THE DATE! Join NABOB & The Power of Urban Radio, Oct. 4-6, at the Washington Marriott Georgetown for critical dialogue detailing strategies to increase Black media ownership, improve industry equity, and grow media investment equality!

We're celebrating in commemoration of 75 Years of Black Owned Radio's Resilience, Impact, and Influence!

Blacks make up 13 percent of the American population, yet we own only 2 percent of all commercial broadcast stations in the U.S., and we receive only 2 percent of media advertising revenue. This low ownership level of broadcast stations and lack of investment means that we cannot have the voice we need to make our concerns adequately heard or addressed by our leaders.

The NABOB Conference and Power of Urban Radio Forum is a three-day event that brings together Black broadcast media owners, digital publishers, senior advertising and marketing executives, local sales management, leading on-air talent, policy leadership, entrepreneurs, cultural creatives, corporate executives, and more!

Lois Wright, the longest serving member of NABOB’s Board of Directors, passed away recently after battling cancer. Lois Wright was one of the pillars of NABOB. Lois joined Inner City Broadcasting Corporation (ICBC) in 1980 as General Counsel, and she joined the NABOB Board of Directors as Counsel to the Board that same year. She was later promoted to Executive Vice President of ICBC.

Jim Winston, NABOB President and CEO, said, “I have very fond memories of working with Lois over our many years together. Lois was on the NABOB Board when I was hired as Executive Director in 1982. She helped me learn about the NABOB membership and the overall broadcast industry. We put on the NABOB Communications Awards Dinner from 1985 to 2011, and had the pleasure of meeting and conversing with most of the notable Black talent in the United States during those dinners. Dining with celebrities such as, Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle, Colin Powell, Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey, Denzel Washington, Spike Lee, Stevie Wonder, and Smokey Robinson, gave us stories to share for many years.”

Ford Motor Company has announced that it has reconsidered removing AM radio from its new vehicles and will now include AM radio in all of its cars. This is a major victory for The National Association of Black Owned Broadcasters (NABOB) and the AM radio industry.

Jim Winston, President and CEO of The National Association of Black Owned Broadcasters (NABOB) said, “We are very pleased to hear that Ford has reversed its position and will now keep AM radio in all of its cars. AM radio is vital in Black communities around the country.”

Winston added, “It is important for the other car manufacturers that said they will eliminate AM radio from their electric vehicles to follow Ford’s example. We will continue to take our message about the importance of AM radio to those other manufacturers.”

The removal of AM radio in electric vehicles from eight of the top 20 automakers producing vehicles in the United States is creating shock waves in the broadcasting industry. This is particularly true for Black owned radio broadcasters, who own 103 AM radio stations. The impact of the technological shift could pose catastrophic consequences for these Black owned radio broadcasters and the audiences they serve, including negative implications to public safety.

“This represents a huge setback for AM radio stations serving the needs of the African American community, as AM radio is a crucial medium for delivering content that is culturally relevant and often missing from other formats,” wrote Jim Winston, President and CEO of The National Association of Black Owned Broadcasters (NABOB) in a letter addressed to Rep. Steve Horsford, the Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC).
