Today was a very exciting day! I picked up the Yei rug I commissioned from Ruby White back in February. We flew to Albuquerque and drove out to the Shiprock area where she lives. We had lunch with Ruby and her husband. The rug is simply magnificent. Ruby was very grateful for the work and I am so honored to be the owner of this masterpiece. Ruby can make different sizes and colors You can learn more about her in the book ”The Weavers Way, Navajo Profiles” This rug is 6’ x 4’. I know she goes from pillow size to this size for her Yei. If you would like to commission your own Ruby White, you can message me your information and I will pass it along to her. She was wonderful sending me update photos along the way. Ruby can mail a completed rug to you but I wanted to meet her. The entire experience was great. This is my auntie Ruby & she lives in Oakspring, Arizona. 💙

Crazy Horse, of the Oglala Lakota tribe, played an integral role in the Battle of Little Bighorn, also known as Custer’s Last Stand. His likeness is now carved into a Black Hills mountain at The Crazy Horse Memorial. The famous leader resisted having his photograph taken, often responding to picture requests with “would you imprison my shadow too?” The memorial sculptor created his likeness based on descriptions from those who knew him. The grand visage, cut into granite, intends to honor the Native American values that Crazy Horse fought for and defended...!

The Trail of Tears was the forced relocation of Native American tribes, particularly the Cherokee, from their homelands in the southeastern U.S. to Oklahoma in the 1830s. The journey was brutal and deadly—about 15,000 Cherokee people were forced to march over 1,000 miles, with inadequate food, shelter, and medical care. Thousands died from disease and exhaustion along the way. The event is remembered as a tragic chapter in American history, symbolizing the immense suffering and loss endured by Native Americans.

There is an ancient Indian saying that something lives only as long as the last person who remembers it. My people have come to trust memory over history. Memory, like fire, is radiant and immutable while history serves only those who seek to control it, those who douse the flame of memory in order to put out the dangerous fire of truth. Beware these men for they are dangerous themselves and unwise. Their false history is written in the blood of those who might remember and of those who seek the truth.~ Floyd ‘Red Crow’ Westerman (Dakota Sioux) actor, activist, singer

Moses J. Brings Plenty (born 4 September 1969) is an Oglala Lakota television, film, and stage actor, as well as a traditional drummer and singer. He is best known for his portrayal as ""Mo"" in the Paramount Network series Yellowstone. Moses Brings Plenty was born on the Pine Ridge Reservation, in South Dakota. He is a direct descendant of Brings Plenty, an Oglala Lakota warrior who fought in the Battle of Little Big Horn. His wife is Sara Ann Haney-Brings Plenty. His nephew Cole Brings Plenty portrays Pete Plenty Clouds in two episodes of 1923.As an actor, he has played bit parts in Hidalgo, Thunderheart, and Pirates of the Caribbean. He also played Quanah Parker in the History Channel documentary Comanche Warrior, which was filmed on the Wild Horse Sanctuary in the southern Black Hills, and Crazy Horse on The History Channel''s Investigating History documentary ""Who Killed Crazy Horse"" and the BBC documentary series The Wild West. He acted in Rez Bomb, considered to be the first movie with a universal storyline set on a reservation. Rez Bomb has been part of the international film festival circuit instead of playing strictly to Native American film festivals, which is a major breakthrough for Native cinema.
In addition to doing theater work in Nebraska, he also portrayed an Apache warrior in the 2011 science fiction western film Cowboys & Aliens and a character named Shep Wauneka in Jurassic World Dominion in 2022.
Brings Plenty is concerned about providing accurate representations of Native peoples in mass media. He says, ""Young people told me they don’t see our people on TV. Then it hit me, they are right. Where are our indigenous people, people who are proud of who they are?"" Brings Plenty also works behind the scenes on Yellowstone and its spin-off prequels 1883 and 1923 as Taylor Sheridan''s American Indian Affairs Coordinator to make sure that each show appropriately represents Native culture."

Sequoyah, a key figure in Cherokee history, developed a writing system for his people in the early 19th century. Despite being illiterate, he created a syllabary with symbols representing syllables of the Cherokee language. By 1821, his system was introduced, and within 25 years, nearly all Cherokee were literate.

The Origin of America’s Favorite Nursery Rhyme:Davy Crockett''s older sister, Effie Crockett was invited to help some mothers in the Muskogee Tribe. Once she arrived in camp, Effie laughed at what she saw. The Muskogee Tribe had a custom of cradling their pappooses among the swaying branches of birch trees. This protected their babies from ground insects, the sun, and wild animals. After first finding it funny, she soon learned all the great reasons for this practice and marveled at the beauty of it.Effie watched the swaying and soothing motion of the topmost branches of the trees. She loved how each baby enjoyed nature, how they listened to the songbirds, observed every ladybug, and smiled at the colors of a butterfly, every little breeze was felt and enjoyed by these young ones; each babe seemed perfectly content.
One of the Tribal mothers began to sing a song to the children in her native tongue. As the Muskogee mother sang, Miss Effie observed a small tear running down the mother’s cheek.
Lulu se pepe i le pito i luga o le laau,
A agi le matagi e luluina le moega pepe,
A gau le lala e paʻu ai le moega pepe,
Ma o le a sau i lalo pepe, moega pepe ma mea uma.
Effie translated the words and kept the tune. She shared it with everyone and it soon became a wildly popular nursery rhyme among the Colonies.
The English translation:
Rock-a-bye baby on the tree top,
When the wind blows the cradle will rock,
When the bough breaks the cradle will fall,
And down will come baby, cradle and all.
Why did the Muskogee mother cry?
A “bough” is simply a tree branch, and its breaking was used by the Muskogee mothers as an analogy of their little baby growing up.
Their little baby would soon outgrow his cradle. With each gently rocking wind, time was passing. One day, little baby would no longer need the protection of his mother. One day, the “branch” would break because her little baby had become too heavy. The “cradle” would fall to the earth – the child, no longer a baby, would dust himself off and grow into a man.
The now famous lullaby was first printed in Mother Goose’s Melody.
The rest is history.
