Truth hurts. And many of us find it hard to tell the truth.
๐๐ฝ We're afraid of hurting someone's feelings.
๐๐ฝ We're worried about what others might think of us.
๐๐ฝ We're concerned there might be an angry reaction.
There are an infinite number of reasons why it might feel hard to speak your truth.
For many years, I thought it was better
๐๐ฝ To be nice and hide my truth.
๐๐ฝ To consider others' before myself.
What I know to be true today?
While considering the feelings of others is important...
Sharing the truth can...
๐ Lead to more open, honest communication
๐ Make the relationship stronger
๐ Helps us stay true to ourselves
Yesterday, Logan shared his truth with Daddy.
The outcome?
๐๐ผ
Greater connection. ๐
Remember:
๐ก Being "nice" and "going along to get along" might keep you 'safe' from seemingly difficult conversations,
๐ก but it also prevents you from showing up fully as yourself and having deeper connections with others.
How might you take a step towards sharing your truth?

Thrilled to share my interview with The Immigrant Experience In America
We chatted about
๐๐ฝ My parents journey to America, leaving two young daughters behind in Hong Kong while they tried to 'make it'.
๐๐ฝ My experiences growing up the child of hard-working immigrants trying to straddle two different cultures.
๐๐ฝ How my relationship with my parents shifted when I chose to be more courageous and get to know them as human beings (not authority figures from my childhood) and learn about their hopes, dreams and fears.
Link to listen to this show is in comments. Let me know what you think and what you're taking away!

And with that... I'm signing off for the rest of 2023 to unplug, disconnect, and recharge myself before the start of a new year.
During my disconnecting, I'll be spending more time connecting with this little fella. As you can tell from his moves, he's already got the holiday feels!
Remember: "Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you."
Everything will be right here when I return. And if you choose to disconnect, it'll be right here for you too when you return. Social media, your work, your to-do list is not going anywhere. I promise. :) So it's ok to let it go for a week and return to it later.
Have a wonderful rest of the year. See you in 2024!

Do you talk to your parents with openness or defensiveness?
Do you talk to your parents with patience OR impatience?
Do you talk to your parents with love OR animosity?
Are you sure?
Here's the thing: When I started having open conversations with my parents ...
๐๐ผ I THOUGHT I was patient and loving.
๐๐ผ I THOUGHT it was my parents' who were being defensive and not listening.
But when I went back to the recordings of our conversations my jaw dropped.
I heard my tone.
I realized that I was the one that was being defensive.
I was the one being closed off.
So how are you REALLY talking to your parents?
If you want to be sure, record your conversations.
Then consider: How do you want your kids to talk to you one day?
Talk to your parents like that.

Author emPact Spotlight: Meet Amy Yip, Author of "Unfinished Business"
We all have unfinished business, right?! When I learned about Amy Yip's book, "Unfinished Business," and her message behind it, I knew I could learn so much from her. (And I believe you can too!)
Join me and author Amy Yip during this Author emPact Spotlight livestream where Amy will share insights from her journey writing her book, breaking down barriers with her own parents through compassionate conversation, and offering lessons learned on belonging, understanding others and transforming relationships.
This is the book and the message that I know has the power to transform relationships and the forthcoming holidays (where unfinished business is hard to run from!).
What do you wish your parents understood about you? How do you wish they would change?
Now think about the last time someone wanted you to change or tried to make you change ... How did you respond? You probably resisted.
Thing is, we always want others to change, but the only thing we have control over is ourselves: how we think, act, and respond.
So if you're trying to break down the wall between yourself and your parents (or other loved ones) this holiday season, try this instead:
Tip #3: Listen to understand them NOT to change them.
๐๐ฝ Consider how you can change and what you can do differently in your interactions with them
๐๐ฝ Ask curious and open questions to better understand their life experiences and beliefs
๐๐ฝ Remember that you can disagree AND still understand them better
๐๐ผ
Check back every Tuesday from now until end of year. I'll share a tip for breaking down the wall between you and your parents.

Do you dread or look forward to the holidays with the family? How can you shift from disconnection to reconnection this holiday season?
Tip #2: Share Fond Memories to Reconnect and Strengthen Bonds
๐๐ฝ Think of fond memories and bring those to your conversations
๐๐ฝ Use photographs, artifacts or just the stories themselves
๐๐ฝ One fond memory will reawaken others, leading to a ripple effect of connection and joy
Having deeper conversations, rekindling and transforming the relationship, breaking down that wall between you and your parents can be hard.
But when you take the time to remember the good, you'll find more good to be seen.
What are the fond memories you have with your parents? Your family?
๐๐ผ
Share your stories or photos in comments so we can all smile and connect over happy family memories.

"How do I break down the wall between myself and my parents?"
I've been getting this question a lot, especially with the upcoming holidays.
Tip #1: Know your why.
๐๐ฝ Why do you want to break down the wall?
๐๐ฝ Why do you want a different type of relationship with your parents?
๐๐ฝ What type of relationship do you want?
Having deeper conversations, rekindling and transforming the relationship, breaking down that wall between you and your parent can be hard.
On my own journey of 40+ hours of conversations over 3 years with my parents, I experienced all kinds of emotions: anger, sadness, resentment. I wanted to give up so many times.
My 'why' kept me going:
๐๐ฝ to heal all the misunderstandings
๐๐ฝ to understand my parents and how to love them better
๐๐ฝ to model a loving adult child/parent relationship for my own kiddo
What is your why?
Know your why and keep that top of mind as you engage in deeper conversations and a rekindling of relationship with your parents. It'll keep you going when things get hard.
