I’ve been seeing the term “underground music” been thrown around casually whether it’s a local event, a musical genre or a dedicated festival!! And it got me wondering what qualifies as underground music today.

Is it a sound that tries to recreate the experience of raves before they became popular? Is it a sound from a specific sub-genre? Can House music qualify as underground music? Or is it simply now synonymous with anything electronic music?

The internet defines Underground Music as “a term used to describe music that is not as commercially successful as popular music and is often created by unsigned artists or those signed to smaller labels.” More so, it “is music with practices perceived as outside, or somehow opposed to, mainstream popular music culture. Underground styles lack the commercial success of popular music movements, and may involve the use of avant-garde or abrasive approaches.”

In historical DJ & electronic music culture this mainly referred to “white label” tracks - unsigned music that had been pressed onto vinyls which carried the blank white label at the center of the vinyl. If one was lucky, it would carry a track & artist name usually written by a sharpie. The genre nonconformity was a loosely applied criteria here with many such tracks falling into one of the several established electronic music sub genres. The cost of pressing vinyl & distribution was significant in those days which limited who & how much new music could be released.

However, a lot has changed since the days of vinyl. For one, the cost of music production much like that for DJing has become accessible to many. Computing power has become very affordable to be able to run one of several music production softwares on the market. This has resulted in an exponential growth of music being produced & released every day!Today one can self-release a track without signing up with a record label to several online platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, Beatport etc. through very affordable 3rd party music distribution services!

So, what is today’s Underground Music?
If it conforms to one of several mainstream genres is it still Underground Music?
If it’s self-released to various online music services is it still Underground Music?
If it’s produced by a well known artist is it still Underground Music?

I’d posit that today’s Underground Music is one which is produced by yet to be discovered local artists who self-release but could fall into one of many known genres & is yet to be signed to a record label.

I pulled together my DJ & event organizer resume for the first time!! Highly recommend everyone do the same. It’s a great way to feel proud of all the time & hard work one has put in to achieve the current state of your musical journey. More importantly, it gives you a perspective on what worked & didn’t, & how you’ve evolved over time. Bonus for me was that having been in this space for 24+ years it was a fun jog through memory lane! 😊
