Did you know? These illustrations feature some of history’s most iconic ocean liners. The Titanic and Britannic, both part of the White Star Line, tragically sank—Titanic on her maiden voyage in 1912, and Britannic during World War I as a hospital ship.

The Lusitania, a Cunard Line vessel, also met a tragic fate when it was torpedoed in 1915 during WWI. These ships are remembered for their innovation and the tragedies that marked their legacy.

An explosion and fire occurred in Hold 4 of the vessel APL Austria, with the incident taking place on or about 12 February 2017. The intense heat spread rapidly, igniting stacks of containers stowed on the hatch pontoons above. The fire burned intensely for approximately three days before it was largely extinguished. During discharge operations, smoldering fires within some containers persisted, requiring the opening and unpacking of containers to facilitate complete extinguishment.

Three containers were found to have carried Calcium Hypochlorite, misdeclared as ‘water disinfectant’ by Chinese shippers. The incident caused significant damage to a large number of containers as well as the vessel itself due to the explosion of these three containers. A R Brink & Associates were appointed to represent one of the slot charterers and their P&I Club.
