The photo “Father's Pride” is taking the spotlight at the Wildlife Photography of the Year (WPY) competition. Photo: BBC

Professional photographer Dritman Mukherjee captured this moment in time at the Champal National Reserve in India. Mukherjee's work was highly regarded in Wildlife Photo Contest of the Year (WPY). In the picture are hundreds of Indian crocodiles, scientifically named Gavialis gangeticus.

Patrick Campbell expert at the Natural History Museum in London is the competition WPY curator. "Crocodiles often keep their babies in their mouths," said Mr Campbell. Seate arch tracks do not allow Indians to do this. Therefore, these people do not have to cling to the back of big fish ”.

"This male mating with many offspring and closely resembles his offspring," explains photographer Dritman Mukherjee to the BBC.

“This alligator is usually quite pale compared to saltwater alligators and swimming pool fish. But we can defend hard. If I get close, it can be very aggressive. ”

The Indian crocodile has been on the list of critically endangered species. South Asia used to have about 20,000 Indian fish. To date, there are only 1,000 adults left, with the majority centering at Uttar Pradesh Reserve.

Photographer Dritman Mukherjee hopes the photo can convey the message of wildlife protection to many people.

This year's WPY contest solvers will be announced on October 13. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the awards ceremony will be held online.
