Hey everyone! With the official election date for the ward 6 City council seat coming up on October 3rd we wanted to publicly publish the candidate forum that we ran with the Cranston Public Libraries on September 19.

Technology has been getting the better of us, but Editor Ed Kdonian has dusted off his ancient YouTube channel from high school to upload the video so it can be more easily publicly viewed. Just click the link below to watch all four candidates discuss the issues important to Ward 6, and Cranston ASF a whole.

The four candidates for the Ward 6 council seat take the time to sit down and answer questions from the p***c regarding their platforms and policies.

The Historic Park Theater hits 99 years young

By PAM SCHIFF

The hazy, hot and humid days of summer could not deter the almost one thousand people from attending the Queen cover band Majesty at the Park Theater on Saturday, September 9.

Prior to the main event, people were able to enjoy free music provided by Louie Bello, Patrick Kearns, Kevin Herchen and Kelvin Fabian in the Park Cafe.

Inside the Comedy Park there were tables set up with varied vendors, encouraging people to get their holiday shopping done early. Read on at

Gritty, powerful “Topdog/Underdog” at Gamm

Theatre Review by Don Fowler
While Artistic Director Tony Estrella is off performing at Massachusetts’s Huntington Theatre, he has brought in two powerful Boston based actors to play the roles of brothers Lincoln and Booth in Suzan-Lori Parks’ “Topdog/Underdog.”

Director Cliff Dole creates the somber atmosphere by setting the two-act play in the round (Or should I say square) on a raised stage representing Booth’s sparse rented room.

To get to your seat, you must pass by Gamm’s darkened original seating area and a long corridor before entering another world. Learn more by visiting https://cranstononline.com/stories/gritty-powerful-topdogunderdog-at-gamm,225682?

Why the Budlong face?
No one happy after yet another Budlong discussion

By ED KDONIAN
As another summer ends with Budlong Pool still closed, Mayor Ken Hopkins held a public forum on Wednesday Sept. 6 for people of the city and members of City Council to voice opinions, concerns and thoughts about the proposed renovations to the pool while also hearing from experts regarding its current condition.

The only public pool in the city, many residents learned to swim at the more-than-Olympic-sized pool since it was first opened in 1939. With a petition of over 2,000 signatures presented to the Mayor on July 24 by the newly formed grassroots organization Cranston Forward, and supported by City Council members Aniece Germain, Robert Ferri and John Donegan, many vocal residents have made it clear they want the pool either repaired or built to nearly identical standards while updating it for ADA (Americans with Disabilities ACT) compliance. Cranston residents selected for statewide minority leadership program

Among 38 statewide tapped to participate in initiative preparing leaders of color for positions of influence throughout RI

The Rhode Island Foundation has selected six Cranston residents to participate in its Equity Leadership Initiative (ELI). The goal is to build a pipeline of leaders of color for positions of influence throughout the state.

“The demographics of our state are changing quickly. Unfortunately, real opportunity for too many has not been keeping pace. Developing programs that raise up new voices is just one way the Foundation is ensuring the opportunity gap continues to close,” said David N. Cicilline, president and CEO of the Foundation.

Yanaiza Gallant, Nina Harrison, Alexander Jimenez, Anthony Mam, Helena Moronta and Sharon Morris were selected from more than 80 applicants. The 12-month leadership development initiative includes monthly group work sessions, regular one-to-one coaching sessions, and networking with high-level connections across sectors. Buttonwoods Brewery’s Oktoberfest returns with music, beer & more

By ROB DUGUAY
With this year’s summer nearing its final weeks of existence, it’s only a matter of time until we all start wearing our favorite flannels and hoodies while experiencing the beautiful New England fall. This seasonal transition brings about a variety of things and in the craft beer world it means that Oktoberfest is upon us. The annual German tradition that originated in Munich is going to be officially starting in a couple weeks and Buttonwoods Brewery on 530 Wellington Avenue in Cranston is putting their own spin on the event. For its fifth year, this version of Oktoberfest is going to be having live music, special brews and delicious food while taking place on the brewery’s parking lot patio on September 16. It starts at 12 noon while being family friendly and all ages along with it being obviously required to be over the age of 21 to imbibe in alcoholic beverages. Summer Cleaning

The nonprofit group Cozy Rhode got together on August 27 to clean up the bike path at Washington Secondary Trail just off of Cranston Street and Garfield Avenue. The cleaning, which covered the northern end of the bike path between the police station and Texas Roadhouse, just happened to be the group's 100th clean up project.

The group, which began in September of 2020, “developed from watching the litter problem in Providence-- and even Rhode Island at large-- develop and remain largely ignored by city officials and higher-up politicians.” Read more at

Picking pecks is part of the fun

Freezing temperatures domed this year’s peach harvest at Barden Family Farm in North Scituate before the fruit formed. But the frost spared apples, blueberries and raspberries that are in abundance.

The 27 varieties of apple trees at Barden are bursting with fruit. It’s not all ready for the picking as Kelly, the school teacher who left her job to help her friend Sandy Barden preserve the legacy of the farm in the wake of the sudden death of her husband, Gilbert Barden, on May 25 2022. Premiere Honey Crisp is the first of such an extensive crop ready for the picking. So, if only Rhode Island Greenings, Liberties, Idared or Macouns will satisfy your apple craving, you’ll need to wait. Get more at

College freshman with SMA will arrive at college in style

By RORY SCHULER
The end of summer loomed and Ciarra Muller waited inside Grieco Honda’s two-story showroom, with her mother, Lacie Messier, at her side.

They’ve been worried about back-to-school transportation.

Like many families who have filtered in and out of Grieco’s Johnston car dealerships, they were waiting for a new vehicle. Unlike most customers, however, their new van required no financing, no money down and no monthly payment. Get the entire story at https://cranstononline.com/stories/back-to-school-advantage,223598?

Bolts looking for spark as kickoff approaches

By ALEX SPONSELLER
The Cranston East football team is looking to bounce back after a tough 2022 in which it won one game and will be relying on a crop of young players to make an impact.

Although the record was not pretty on paper, last year’s group had chances to beat DII powers such as Barrington and Woonsocket, holding leads against each late in their respective matchups, while also beating East Greenwich in a non-league game.
