The Pawtuxet General Story - This is Jess Watts. Owner and originator of The Pawtuxet General. She has an early background in theatre, studying drama at Eastern Nazarene College, and travelling to England to participate in a course at Strafford Upon Avon and portraying Andromache in Euripides' "Trojan Women."

In Pawtuxet Village, Jess is best known as "Jess from Little Falls," where she was the chef or "Jess from the Farmer's Market," where she was the Market Manager for years. This chef and entrepreneur cut her chops in some of Rhode Island's best known spots, working as the very voice of "Rocky Point" and "G. Fox." She also put in her dues at some of Rhode Island's top restaurants, such as "Pot au feu" and "Federal Reserve."

After COVID challenged the world, Jessica "took her show on the road," joining forces with her long-time spouse, Jon Schermerhorn, hi, and broke out with a fun and popular podcast about Pawtuxet. "The Pawtuxet General" Podcast was born on October 27th 2021. It has survived 109 published episodes and 25,000 downloads, across 8 countries, reaching as far as Iceland and Singapore. Then, in May of 2022, we "popped-up" with our "High Quality General Store AND a Podcast!," in the driveway of what was "Tag Sale Treasures," with her friend, Amy. Jess designed a retail table and we started selling nuts and breads, to keep paying the electric company. Sometimes, we popped up inside of what was "The Emerald Frog." With more help from our friends at The Edgewood Congregational Church, in May of 2023, Jess steered The Pawtuxet General, back to her friends at The Pawtuxet Farmer's Market, as a vendor, rather than a market manager, down by Rhodes on the Pawtuxet, where she re-introduced her unique and robust baked goods and fresh pies to the table. She is about to enjoy her 3rd season, this May. Her hope is a permanent spot in the village, proper, in 2025, with even more great locally sourced high quality grocery items AND a podcast. Welcome in and Thaaaaaaaaaank YOU!

This week, we return from our period of mourning with sunshine, sweetness, and a new appreciation for our community. We were sorry to take the time off. We're happy to be back, at our roost in the alcove of warm and welcoming Edgewood congregational Church, where we will, once again, attempt to sell you our fresh breads, nuts, cookies, muffins, cupcakes, and, this week- the legendary "Heavenly Danish," appropriately, served, at our church We will do 2 kinds - Blueberry/Lemon-curd, and cheese. We've missed you all, very much, over the hiatus and look forward to reconnecting, as we begin our long, slow thaw.

Hi Neighbors!

We had to go on a short hiatus to bury a friend.

It's been a rough couple of months. That said - we want to reach out and "reconnect," as the time off has brought to light that our original idea was, indeed, valuable.

That said - If you don't know us - let us introduce ourselves to you.
We are The Pawtuxet General. We are a high quality grocery store and high quality podcast. We were founded in November of 2021, as a podcast and started our little grocery business in May of 2022, on a street corner, next to the gas station. After losing everything, after COVID, this small shop, selling fresh bread, quality nuts, and podcast advertisers became our only income.

We have struggled for 4 years, subsisting, meagerly, building up our business, summer by summer, and winter by winter. We offer quality nuts from Virginia and Spanish Nuts, Quality FRESH breads from Le Favorite bakery, quality local honey, and our own line of quality FRESH baked goods. We do specials on weekends and take orders, anytime.

Jessica Watts, the founder, has decades of experience in food service and worked for 16 years ( 2005-2021) as the chef at "Little Falls Bakery and Cafe'." Her recipes are robust and original and her demand for quality control is second to none. She majored in Theatre arts at Eastern Nazarene College, studying at Strafford upon Avon.

Jon Schermerhorn is an Army veteran, who, also, served in the Rhode Island National Guard for many years, deploying to Bosnia and providing security in the wake of 9/11. He graduated from New England Tech, studying Television and Radio Production Arts. He interned on Disney's production of Underdog, moving on to a 15 year career in motion pictures and television shows. With the downturn in the industry, he joined forces with his wife, Jessica, to try to help her build her vision.

Although we hit some hard speed bumps this year, that forced us to slow down our roll, a bit, we are still growing and working hard, doing our thing. We are hoping to move into brick and mortar shop, this spring (2025). We hope you'll help us, along the way - and email us, if you get hungry!
