The Ketubah
The Ketubah (Hebrew lit. “her writing”) is the Jewish marriage contract required from the groom and read aloud during the marriage ceremony. The one-sided contract was not an illusory obligation but a document prepared, according to the legal enactments of the Jewish sages, by the husband, detailing the responsibilities that he would have to his wife during their wedded life together (see Exodus 21:10; Lev. 18-21; Deut. 24:5). The rabbis extended the explicit Old Testament requirements of food, clothing, and conjugal rights to include the demand that a husband respect his wife and not make her cry. He must deny himself to provide for her needs. One groom wrote, “Be to me as wife according to the Laws of Moses and Israel, and I will serve, honor, support, sustain, and clothe thee according to the customs of the Jewish husbands.” The traditional order to these verbs expressing responsibility, beginning with “serve,” indicates the spirit of the document. The wife has always had the happy responsibility of preserving this document.

I went back to school this year. I got rejected from the first online program I found and took that as a sign. Then God sent me a sign through that I should try again. I researched the best program for the field I’m interested in.

Balancing my coursework with my other responsibilities has taken a lot of discipline. My laptop is never too far out of reach, and I’ve found myself multitasking to accomplish my goals.

I flunked out of college over 20 years ago. Everything in me wanted to protect myself from the possibility of failing again. I wasn’t going to talk about my journey just in case I couldn’t finish, but here I am, sharing the process, not the final product.

It’s finals week, and I’m proud of myself. I love what I’m learning and how it’s expanding my worldview and giving me depth. Chile, I’m fighting for my life with this MacBook, but I’m doing my best. I don't know how long it’s going to take me. I don’t know that I’ll ace every test and do everything well, but one thing I do know is that I’m proud of myself for trying again.

I hope you’ll try again at whatever your thing is, too.
