On July 7th, 2024, at approximately 11:20 pm, Officers with the Wallace Police Department responded to Wallace Gardens Assisted Living in reference to a resident who had walked off from the facility. The resident was an elderly female suffering from a cognitive impairment. After canvassing the area attempting to locate the resident, Officers on scene requested the Wallace Police K-9 Unit for tracking purposes. Upon arrival, K-9 Officer Sanchez assessed the situation, gathered a blanket belonging to the female to use as a scent article, and deployed K-9 Viper for tracking. Despite the rainy conditions, K-9 Viper was able to locate the missing female resident, who appeared to be injury free. Duplin County EMS evaluated the patient and transported her to the local hospital.

Update: Rose Hill Fire Chief Gary Boney, who is at the scene told Duplin Journal that it was a lightning pop. Fortunately no one was electrocuted. Crews are still on scene working on the patient extraction.

Breaking News: A firefighter has been electrocuted while working on a patient extraction at an accident on I-40 at the 382 mile marker.
According to David Miller, Fire News director it is unknown whether the firefighter was struck by lightning or by other electrical source. More information to follow.

NC DOT Announcement: U.S. 117 just north of the town of Teachey is scheduled to close beginning July 22 for drainage improvements.

Maintenance crews for the N.C. Department of Transportation will replace a crossline pipe underneath U.S. 117 at this location. The road is expected to reopen by the end of July.

Detour signs will send drivers onto Charity Road, Interstate 40, N.C. 11 and N.C. 41. Drivers should be mindful of the longer commute while using the detour, and to be cautious near the work site

NCDOT announced multiple intersections in Duplin County will be converted into all-way stops next week to improve safety.

Weather permitting, on July 9, crews will install stop signs and pavement markings at the following intersections along Tram Road:

Bethel Church Road
Bennetts Bridge Road/ Scotts Store Road
Red Hill Road
Drivers should be aware of crews and equipment in these intersections while the improvements are made.

The N.C. Department of Transportation conducted a review at each location and based on the results, along with traffic volumes, an all-way stop was determined to be the most cost-effective way to improve safety. To learn more about all-way stops, visit this NCDOT webpage.
