This week we look back at some of the artists that we have lost over the last year.
We remember Melanie with her iconic song Look What They Have Done to My Song. Texas lost two major artists W. C. Clark – the Father of Austin Blues and the irrepressible singer, songwriter, novelist, gubernatorial candidate, and dog lover Kinky Friedman. We hear Clark perform Rough Edges while Kinky adds Sold American. We also lost several icons from the Urban Folk Revival.
Alex Hassilev was the last surviving member of the Limeliters. As a multi-linguist he brought many songs to the group including Cunna from Brazil. Barbara Dane sang traditional songs such as I Know Where I’m Going and also jammed with Blues artist Sam “Lightnin’ Hopkins on I’m Going Back, Baby.
Just this month, Peter Yarrow lost his long battle with cancer. As part of Peter, Paul & Mary, he was part of the soundtrack of our lives with songs such as If I Had a Hammer and Puff(the Magic Dragon) and was a longtime supporter and performer at the Kerrville Folk Festival here in Texas.
We also lost one of America’s most talented songwriters Billy Edd Wheeler, whether it was his witty response to gentrification as in The Little Brown Shack Out Back or his classic song Jackson, he always delivered the goods.
In late December we lost Josh White, Jr. whose career started at age four touring with his dad as we hear in their rendition of One Meatball. To hear these and many more, join me for I Hear America Singing.
