Trish Johnson remembers her introduction to mindfulness techniques connected to sports. She was a competitive volleyball player in highschool, north of the Twin Cities in Forest Lake. She can still recall a guest of her coach coming to practice and having the players lay on their backs while they were walked through a series of prompts related to drawing attention to different parts of the body. It was a kind of invitation to a way of thinking and a presence that felt completely new to her. It was not an immediate leap toward meditation, but for Johnson it was the crack that opened the door. You will enjoy it as much as all the folks that came out in Decorah, Dubuque, and La Crosse.

NEW BOOK. Pre-Order Today. Ships June 6. www.ramshacklepress.org
Folk percussionist MIkkel Beckmen, known for playing regularly with Charlie Parr and Mike Munson, among others, is publishing his first book with ramshackle press. Mikkel did a solo thru hike of the Superior Hiking Trail in 2021. The 310 mile trail skirts Lake Superior, the largest fresh water lake in the world. On his 24 days of hiking he brought no music, electronics, or even books. Just a journal to record thoughts each day. The book has 24 chapters, one for each day of hiking the trail. It is an ode to self-discovery, the natural world, and one person's question, "Who am I in relation to wilderness and to the land?"
The book includes artwork by his daughter Siri Marie, and a postcard/bookmark with a code that takes you right to Charlie Parr's "817 Oakland", which Mikkel proposes as the hiker's anthem.
