It is with deep sadness I must announce the death of my author, Gene Hull, who just celebrated his 95th birthday in August. The father of eight children, he was a former noted musician and bandleader of the post-big-band era…. from classical to pop to jazz. Among the musical organizations he performed with was the Duke Ellington Orchestra. For many years following, he was the entertainment producer for Royal Caribbean Cruises—both its theatre shows and ice shows. A graduate of the University of Notre Dame, Gene was an observer of the human condition, as any writer should be, and has published four books. He will be missed.

All the bars, taverns, and pubs described in this book are open for business serving alcohol and food on a daily basis. Some have been in operation for 400 years, many for at least 100 years. Most of these places are famous and they all have interesting stories to tell. Famous personalities play a prominent role in a lot of these events. People like Ernest Hemingway, Teddy Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, and even George Washington frequented their favorite drinking spots. The occasional appearance of supernatural powers used by some of the characters, and a tinge of Sci-fi in a scene or two are woven through the plot. Nevertheless, day-to-day greed, egotism, and perhaps something poisonous were the only forces steaming on their dinner plates during the Donnelly’s Thanksgiving reunion.
That reunion does have classic features generally found in murderous situations of this kind…however, there were some unusual tensions between the family members, and the arrival of some uninvited guests certainly changed the outcome.

The prologue introduces Keith Fischer. Not interactive in the main plot, he was still linked to the apparently coincidental formation of a small team intertwined in the disastrous reunion. These four gifted individuals will try to stop a different kind of poison powerful enough to create a world-ending apocalypse in the sequel, Toxic Tinsel. Keith reappears in the epilogue of Toxic Turkey leaving us with a forecast of doom.

Sortino Decisions: The Consequences of Life and Death by Thomas S Dimauro begins with the kidnapping of a teenage boy, then transitions to the backstory of the main character, Vincenzo Sortino, who was born into a Sicilian Mafia dynasty. He moves to the US for an education and transforms from a reserved youth into a respected executive. Despite his accomplishments, he carries the weight of his family's violent legacy, haunted by survivor's guilt. Embodying the American Dream with Sicilian roots, he is forced to come to terms with the delicate balance between wealth and familial bonds. However, as he enters retirement, an old vendetta threatens his safety and that of his loved ones. Through trials, he grasps the complexities of familial ties, striving to maintain cohesion in grave adversity and putting a heritage that is both enriching and burdensome into the shaping of his life's journey.

Thomas S. Dimauro's Sortino Decisions threads a human interest story into a family drama thriller that starts against the backdrop of Italy's tumultuous Risorgimento era, a piece of real historical context and cultural significance that I did not know anything about. Dimauro's writing is packed with exhaustive research on Sicilian culture and traditions, coming across as a lived experience that takes us across the Atlantic Ocean. I frequently felt like I shared the room due to Dimauro's rich descriptions of events like Sunday dinners and familial bonds, with deeper themes of identity and belonging. We do know that a young member of the Sortino family is captured immediately, and in due course, the reason why and its aftermath are slowly revealed. Dimauro's adept storytelling keeps the plot engaging and moving forward, making Sortino Decisions a really good read with true historical depth and emotional resonance. Very highly recommended.
