Weekly weather and events

Basin Events with Weather conditions.
Hello, Uintah Basin we’re here to guide you through the week’s events , day by day, through Sunday.
We’ll kick off with a St. Patrick’s Day nod to our local history, and for detailed weekend plans, check our Thursday post for more on Saturday and Sunday. Let’s dive into your week with "The Vernal Beacon"!

**Monday, March 17 – St. Patrick’s Day Celebration**

It’s St. Patrick’s Day, echoing in the Uintah Basin through Irish settlers like Patrick O’Neil, a cattle rancher from the 1880s who helped shape our region. No big events are planned, so celebrate with green attire or a small gathering—share your traditions with us! Snow showers (60% chance) should clear by evening, with a high near 37°F and a low of 21°F, plus shifting winds (10-20 mph), making indoor festivities cozy and a quick outdoor toast feasible later.

**Tuesday, March 18 – Sports, Workshops, and Speaker Series**

Teen Crafting Change Empowerment Workshops kick off at 3:30 PM (check ThisIsVernal.com for location), empowering youth through creativity. Uintah High School hosts a doubleheader (1880 W 500 N): Girls Varsity Softball vs. Union High at 3:30 PM, then Varsity Soccer vs. Maeser Prep at 5:30 PM (details at uintah.net). The Uintah Basin Speaker Series follows at 7:00 PM (venue on ThisIsVernal.com), free and open to all. Abundant sunshine with a high of 37°F, low of 19°F, and light SSW winds (5-10 mph) make it perfect for afternoon sports and a crisp evening talk.

**Wednesday, March 19 – Storytelling and Civic Engagement**

The Vernal Utah Storytelling Festival (Day 1) starts at 6:30 PM , enchanting all ages with local tales, while the Vernal City Council Meeting at 7:00 PM (374 E Main St) offers a public forum (agendas at vernalcity.org). Sunny skies persist with a high of 36°F, low of 19°F, and WSW winds (5-10 mph), ideal for an evening out—just bundle up as it cools.

**Thursday, March 20 – Storytelling and Hunting Applications**

The Vernal Utah Storytelling Festival (Day 2) wraps up at 6:30 PM , paired with the Big Game Hunting Application Window opening today through April 24 for Utah’s 2025 hunts (wildlife.utah.gov, 800-221-0659). Cloudy skies bring a high of 32°F, low of 12°F, and west winds (5-10 mph), keeping the storytelling cozy indoors and hunters planning from home.

**Friday, March 21 – Home & Garden Expo and More**

The 32nd Annual Home & Garden Show and Outdoor Expo runs all day at the Uintah Conference Center (313 E 200 S), alongside All About Art Events at 2:00 PM (ThisIsVernal.com) and an Aggie Chocolate Tasting & Alumni Mentoring Preview at 7:00 PM at USU Uintah Basin (320 N Aggie Blvd, usu.edu/ub). A mix of sun and clouds with a high near 30°F, low of 17°F, and SW winds (5-10 mph) suits browsing vendors or tasting chocolate, though dress warmly.

**Saturday, March 22 – St. Patrick’s Day Ruck and Chocolate Tasting**

Join the St. Patrick’s Day Ruck at 10:00 AM , a themed walk/run with a backpack, then enjoy USU UB Community Chocolate Tasting Events at 7:00 PM (two sessions, 320 N Aggie Blvd, usu.edu/ub). Early forecasts suggest low 30s with partly cloudy skies, brisk but manageable for the morning ruck with layers, and cozy for evening tastings indoors—full weekend details in Thursday’s post.

**Sunday, March 23 – A Day to Reflect and Prepare**

No events are listed , so relax or visit the Utah Field House of Natural History (496 E Main St). Expect cool highs near 30°F with a sun-cloud mix, great for a bundled-up stroll or indoor prep—check Thursday’s post for the full scoop.

**Stay Connected**
This week blends community, culture, and practical fun. Look to our Thursday post for detailed weekend plans, and share your events in the comments, you can also join Facebook group to get your event added asap.

Red Moon –
Last night, March 13-14, 2025, a stunning “Blood Moon” lit up the sky during a total lunar eclipse, despite bad weather limiting our view— This rare event happens when Earth’s shadow turns the moon a deep red, a cosmic show of nature’s artistry. It peaked around 1 AM MDT and wrapped up by 4 AM, making it a late-night treat for stargazers.

Why go out to see it? Beyond the awe factor, it’s a chance to witness something special—lunar eclipses like this don’t come often, and the red hue is a jaw-dropping twist. Just outside of Vernal, it’s even better. Our dark skies, far from city glare, make the moon pop like nowhere else. Sure, it’s been raining most of the night, and now it’s lightly snowing (no road accumulation in town yet, though the mountains are likely dusted), but if the clouds part even briefly, the view’s worth it. Bundle up, head to a spot like Red Fleet or Steinaker, and catch the tail end before sunrise!

Living in Vernal means this is our backyard bonus—world-class nature, from dinosaur bones to red moons, just minutes away. Next time you’re bragging about the Uintah Basin, add this to the list.

Did you see it? Please Share your pics!

Our Story

Our mission is to promote Vernal Utah as a great place to Work, Live and Play.

We hope to Demonstrate and show compelling reasons why shopping local is a huge economic advantage to the community (such as creating JOBS!) We promote events and offer fund raising opportunities for community groups and individuals who need help from the community who share and support our mission. We are a NOT for profit group, visit VernalPromotions.com for more information.

Vernal Retailers: You are invited to join Vernal Merchants Association for a more unified, educational approach. This group is for all brick and mortar stores to educate and compete with online retailers. The cost to our community for online shopping is just beginning to unfold. In a recent article from the Vernal Newspaper, it is asking government officials to not allow a new tax being proposed on advertising. I say why not? Local Retailers need help supporting our local community. Our government will tax us in many other ways to help offset the revenue losses from online purchases. Keep a lookout and help us educate the public and give compelling reasons why shopping local supports our unique and precious way of life in the Basin.
