HO, HO, HO...It's that time of year when the Vermilion Photojournal will be taking a holiday break next week (we'll be back on Jan. 2), but before we sign off on another eventful year, there are still a few stories that are still hanging out there (more to come in the new year)...first, the board of education decides enough is enough as far as the district's aging infrastructure, and votes to place a bond levy before voters...then, we thank those who silently but forcefully make a difference in our community....and city residents - don't forget about free garbage month and that the winter parking ban is in effect...don't let the new year come without getting your community news. COUNTDOWN TO CHRISTMAS...The Christmas holiday is less than two weeks away, but there's more than just shopping going on in the city and townships...first, the Ohio Supreme Court rejects the Novotny barrier case, but there's another one on the burner...and related to that, a trustee wants "new blood" in the reappointment of a township BZA member; then we switch to the city, where the VFD is under scrutiny from council members after the chief underscores an October issue during a committee report...then, we have tons of news from Port Authority, where everything from trees in the river, its future budget and staffing, to a new kiosk were among the many discussion items. LIGHT UP VERMILION! This week's Photojournal catches up with the Vermilion Parks and Recreation Board, and has the details for this Friday's holiday events, which include Light Up Vermilion, and a holiday concert by the Vermilion Community Band, sponsored by the Friends of Ritter. Yes, there will be a splash pad at the Vermilion Community Pool after action by the Parks Board and Vermilion City Council...then, Ward 4 Councilman Jeff gives an update as to the community support for the Showse Park project...and it also looks like pickleball is coming to West Breeze after the board is given some prelims on the layout...and it looks good for the lead situation in Vermilion following a report by the service director. GOBBLE GOBBLE! This week's VPJ comes out a little earlier, and it's the perfect time to get into the holiday spirit. We have information about all the festive events going on this weekend and until Christmas. Also, we catch up with last week's committees/council meetings, at which council approved to move forward with the police station build and funding, which is more than a $1/2 million over estimates...then, VFD station #2 begins to get a much-needed facelift. GIVING IN THE COMMUNITY...Meetings are winding down for the holidays, so it's a perfect time to focus on giving in our Great Town on a Great Lake...first, one of Vermilion's own, as president of the National Ladies Auxiliary, went to Washington, D.C. and had the honor of taking part in Veterans Day services at Arlington Cemetery...and speaking of giving, our community always comes out in full force for those in need, and the 54th (you read that right) Operation Christmas Joy kicks off - we have the details, and read the commentary by Chairman Brad Schwab...Vermilion and Brownhelm are not short of holiday activities - read about the first round of these events...and Mayor Jim has the latest and greatest about the pending developments in the city...Don't be caught empty-handed at the holidays. HONORING VERMILION'S VETERANS...and that's where we start with this week's VPJ as we feature photos from last Monday's Veterans Day services downtown...then, we focus on the Vermilion Board of Education, where the treasurer reports that without money coming in for permanent improvement, those types of projects will eat away at the general fund...and Novotny's is back in the news after the township BZA turns down an appeal of the zoning inspector's decision on the west side fencing of the business...and residents may not like the proposed housing going in on the east side of town, but no one is protesting the new housing going in on the west side, as Planning approves the final plat for Cambridge Crossing Phase 3...the holidays are right around the corner. HAPPY HALLOWEEN! We've had a lot of news to throw at you the past couple weeks, and we're playing catch-up. First, we congratulate the Vermilion Sailor football team for its great run - and are rooting for them to go all the way. Go Sailors! (We've got a pending story on some local SBC champs that will keep the spirit going...) First, we catch up with Vermilion City Council Committees, where a study of SR 6 will not cost the city a dime, but will be later than anticipated...we also have an update on the 6119 sewer project, and council debates, then tables action on money that is coming to the city as a result of reappraisals...and a former fire chief announces his retirement, we catch up with Port Authority as the weather extends the season, and Chief Hartung said car/deer accidents are starting to mount up - be careful out there! Speaking of being careful, city-wide trick or treat is this evening - watch it out there as the ghosts and goblins will be making their way through the city's streets. PARK IT HERE...That's the theme of this week's Vermilion Photojournal as we catch up with the Vermilion Parks & Recreation Board's October meeting, where a multitude of topics were covered. First, the board helps get the ball rolling at Showse Park by providing $10,000 toward a fitness trail...also, it looks like pickleball is coming to West Breeze after Parks spends another $10,000 for engineering to deal with drainage...also, the splash pad at the city pool is moving forward, but with a few tweaks...and how many trees should be in the parks? And a story that broke as last week's paper was being printed, the Ohio Supreme Court decides the Sunnyside PUD issue will not be put back on the ballot (note: this is a different issue than the charter issue on the Nov. ballot). SCHOOLAPALOOZA...Exit council, and enter the Vermilion Local School District...this week's VPJ catches up with the Vermilion Board of Education, and some of the athletic highlights of our VHS stars...Our front page is an homage to our Vermilion Sailors, who have only lost one this season, and brought home the coveted Win Our, which has been in Huron since 1966...that's right, 1966. Go Sailors! The SBC honors are also starting to rack up for our athletes. Then, the Vermilion Board of Education hears a presentation about what the needs and costs are to upgrade its facilities and buildings...and the Lorain County MetroParks makes another commitment in V-town, asking Planning for a new trailhead/parking on Sunnyside...and we've got two townships, Design & Review, and more! WHAT'S THE BIG "TIF" ABOUT? That's the theme of our paper this week as Vermilion City Council is asked about the proposed TIF by the developer of the Sunnyside PUD, but the law director says there's nothing doing until after the issue is settled by the courts and with the Firelands Schools...and hey, all you drivers that don't see signs. The service director says the VPD has already ticketed cars for attempting to travel down Sunnyside - a no, no while all the work is being done on that road. And Safe Routes To School Phase 2 is on the horizon for 2025...and, of course, Mayor Jim gives his two cents in this week's issue. SUNNYSIDE UP (OR DOWN?) That's our top story this week heading into Woollybear Sunday, and the proposed PUD on Sunnyside goes to the Ohio Supreme Court as the Concerned Citizens Group continues to fight. Whether the court will hear the case is pending...and the Splash Pad has made its way through Parks and a first reading at council, but the mayor would like more info about its operating costs...and, due to our deadline, on our digital site, Supt. Dave Hile addresses the false alarm that occurred at VHS this week...and Parks Board is working with some of the city's big event personnel so the events and public use of amenities such as the gazebo can co-exist...and don't forget about Woollybear Sunday, Sept. 29!!
