It’s a wrap! We completed our Live Dive on Saturday at Stearns Wharf at the Sea Center. It took the support of many people and organizations but we brought live video from underwater so that people could see what it looks like under the pier.

Blair Mott with and I wore underwater communications and Blair presented from below - describing the sea life we encountered and about the technology we were using. I had an hdmi cable from my underwater housing up to a monitor on the surface. Topside MC Sarah Ettman with the Sea Center gave natural history info about kelp forests and the Santa Barbara Channel. Dive instructor John Paul Morgan assisted us underwater with dive ops and tended our cables. Sea Center Manager Roy tended cables topside. Jorge Garcia shot two cameras topside. Thanks to everyone who took part and assisted!

The visibility was not great but I’m told people were fascinated with the live video feed showing lots of colorful sea life growing on the pilings. More to follow…!

We had a successful trial run today of our underwater uplink ‘Live Dive’ at The Sea Center. Blair Mott presented from below Stearns Wharf to Sarah Ettman topside while I shot uw camera and John Paul Morgan assisted with cables and dive ops. Jorge shot two cameras of the presentation area to prep for tomorrows event when we go live from below at 11 am. There was a lot of life down there! Crabs, sea stars, urchins, sponges, fish, nudibranchs and more. And colorful too.
Thanks to The Sea Center and the SB Museum of Natural History for putting on this great event to celebrate underwater parks tomorrow, Saturday 1/20/2024.

We’re prepping our gear to do an underwater uplink presentation at Stearns Wharf on Saturday for the Sea Center to celebrate Underwater Parks Day. I flew my drone recently as part of the CINMS Large Whale Entanglement Response Training Day off Santa Barbara. Drones can help entanglement teams by shooting video of entangled whales so the team can better understand what kind of gear is wrapped around the whale before the they approach it. Drones are non-invasive information gatherers!

I’m pictured with Nick Voss who did an an awesome job of launching and retrieving my drone - not an easy task while at sea!

Interesting how this Panama graysby is jostled into moving by this Cortez damselfish. It’s almost as if the damsel is saying, Move! - there is a huge creature approaching… meaning me!

Check out the orange spots and dark colored bars on this colorful graysby, a species of grouper.

Graysbys are protogynous hermaphrodites, starting life as female and then becoming male as the get older.

Here is the trailer for Birds of Los Baños - a film about nesting Night Herons and Snowy Egrets that nest near the Los Baños pool and the City of Santa Barbara's plan to build a kiddy pool next to the nesting site. I edited this with filmmaker Gail Osherenko and flew aerials for the film.

Join filmmaker Gail Osherenko for 4 screenings of Birds of Los Baños on Feb 2nd starting at 5:30 pm at the SBIFF Education Center on 1330 State Street - as part of the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.

In Birds of Los Baños, Gail shows how a local population of Night Herons and Snowy Egrets nest in the trees next to Los Baños pool in Santa Barbara. Both species are protected by the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act. It also shows how the City of Santa Barbara planned to build a kiddy play pool next to the nesting site and how this could disrupt the bird populations.

See the film and hear the latest status of the birds and the project from Gail on Feb 2nd!

I edited the film with Gail and shot the aerial video of the site.

Enjoy!

Join me today as I present tips to students on how to use their cameras to create impactful digital stories. Or, as I like to say: "How to use your cell phone to take photos and videos to tell stories that inspire people to care about our planet. Or, how to become an activist that uses digital stories to make the world a better place."

Tales of Exploration is a MERITO Foundation project sponsored by National Geographic and the Channel Island Harbor Foundation.

Whale sharks, the largest fish in the ocean, eat tiny plankton and small fish. Water enters their mouth as they swim and passes through filtering pads that capture plankton before exiting through their gills. These gentle giants are endangered due fishing in unregulated fisheries and because they are caught as bycatch and entanglements in other fisheries.
