So awesome to see a thick forest of giant kelp stretching up to the surface. Not only is it amazing to dive through this golden forest, but kelp also provides amazing habitat for a huge diversity of species that rely on it for food and shelter.
Many areas off California have lost their kelp forests to a variety of reasons, including climate change, invasive species, and disease. Many people want to restore kelp forests but it’s a tough issue that is not easily solved.
At this spot at Catalina, luckily for me, kelp was very healthy and beautiful.

MERITO Foundation teaches kids that waterways lead to the ocean. Help keep waterways and the ocean clean by picking up trash and disposing properly! We all benefit from a healthy planet!
I edited this video as part of MERITO Foundation’s webinar to inspire youth to use social media to help make the planet a better place.

I’m helping the owner of a new electric skateboard company with his website and marketing. So naturally I need to get to know the product! This awesome Exway Flex SE with hydro wheels can go 25 mph and it’s charge will last 17-20 miles. I hold a small controller that allows me to accelerate or brake. Super fun to sidewalk surf with an electric board!

Jumpin’ off the pier at Prisoner’s Harbor, Santa Cruz Island!
Fun family trip out to Prisoners Harbor at Santa Cruz Island on @islandpackers . After landing, we hiked up a trail to get great views of the island and the ocean and then headed back down for a picnic on the beach. A fun adventure!
Leopard sharks are readily identifiable by the striking pattern of black saddle-like markings and large spots across their backs and sides. These sharks feed on small crabs, shrimp and small fish and are harmless to humans. It is legal to fish for these but all sharks should be protected because they reproduce slowly and they’re really important to the health of the ocean.
KING TIDE - Ventura
Some aerial video I shot last week during an exceptionally high tide called a 'king tide'. King tides help us visualize what coastlines might look like in the future if sea levels continue to rise. Enjoy!
Fun afternoon at the beach with the family and some friends. Just gotta get outdoors and get wet! Thanks Rocio for shooting video of my wave 🌊!

Happy Mother’s Day to all the Moms in the world! You bring us into the world, protect us and help us be all we can be.

Gray whale moms carry their unborn calf for 13.5 months, swim to the warm protected lagoons of Baja to give birth, nurse their calf for months, and then swim north with their calf to feeding grounds as far as Alaska. Awesome Moms! Check out this cow/calf pair of gray whales!
A 37 foot-long dead gray whale washed ashore off Ventura. It was likely headed north towards Alaska following it’s annual migration to warm lagoons in Baja. Scientists are not sure of the cause of death, but have said that gray whale mortality has increased due to starvation due to poor feeding ground conditions in the arctic. Warmer ocean temperatures reduce the productivity of amphipods, their food. The whale will likely be towed out to sea today to a location where it is less likely to drift back to shore.
The reason scientists recommend against picking invasive algae Sargassum horneri, also called devil weed, is because each plant has both male and female gametes making it self fertile. If picked during its reproductive seasons a single plant drifting could start a whole new population in a different area. . .
Tap to hear the sounds of snapping shrimp that snap so loud they stun their prey!

There are those moments when you know something special is happening... I was at the edge of a large opening in the kelp forest and a few tope sharks swam past me and began to circle around a large clump of kelp in the middle. Soon, more sharks came and then more and more, and they started swimming in a circle like on a giant carousel. I remained calm so not to startle them or to cause and end to this moment. I enjoyed being able to watch them as they slowly and gracefully went about their own business and appreciated that they seemed to have a little interest in me but not a need to move quickly away. Seeing moments like this is why exploring the ocean is so alluring, if you keep looking the ocean will reveal its mysteries...!
