The West Virginia Economic Development Authority and Jim Justice, the state’s governor, have announced the approval of $75 million in spending allocated to support the construction of a steel sheet mill being built by Nucor Corp. in Mason County, West Virginia.

Funding from West Virginia will help upgrade infrastructure supporting the recycled-content steel mill Nucor is building in that state.

Lithium-ion battery recycling Aqua Metals Inc. has announced what it calls significant operational milestones at its pilot facility, as well as the successful closing of a $1.5 million bridge loan to fund operations while it continues to pursue ongoing due diligence and initiatives for long-term financing.

The lithium-ion battery recycler is in the process of demonstrating its ability to scale its proprietary Li AquaRefining technology.

Nucor Corp. has announced guidance for its fourth quarter of 2024 ending Dec. 31, indicating it expects its earnings per share to drop from $1.05 in the previous quarter and instead to range from 55 cents to 65 cents.

Steelmaking and metals recycling company predicts fourth quarter earnings per share will shrink by about 40 percent compared with the prior quarter.

Through the agreement, Cyclic Materials will supply copper produced at its spoke operations, advancing sustainable practices in the rare earths industry and driving copper circularity while addressing growing demand for the recycled materials central to the energy transition.

Copper recovered from electric motors will be delivered to Glencore’s copper recycling operation in Quebec.

Per the annual report, the U.S. PET bottle collection rate was 33 percent in 2023, a 4 percent increase from 29 percent in 2022 and the highest recycling rate in the U.S. since 1996.

The organization’s yearly report reveals that the North American PET recycling rate surpassed 40 percent, among other record highs, last year.

The European Electronics Recyclers Association, representing 42 international companies in more than 40 countries, is warning that the Jan. 1, 2025, implementation of the Basel Convention E-Waste Amendments and its adoption in the European Union and other neighboring governments will increase the costs of compliant treatment of temperature exchange equipment from refrigerators.

The European Electronics Recyclers Association says European TEE recyclers must identify recycling solutions within Europe, where material values are significantly lower than those seen exporting to Pakistan, which was a common destination for these devices.
