From Phil Jones:

There are several really good high school QBs that wowed fans this past football season, but there’s not many - if any - who are having the kind of year that Lee County’s Weston Bryan is having.

Bryan won the GHSA Class 5A state championship in boys wrestling on Saturday, continuing what has already been a banner senior season for the three-sport athlete.

He led the Trojans to a 13-1 overall record, including the region title in Region 2-5A and a trip to the state semifinals. He threw for just under 4,000 yards while scoring 63 TDs total (29 passing and 34 rushing touchdowns) in his final season as the Trojans' QB.

Bryan recently finished his final high school wrestling season with a perfect 24-0 record, and he was dominant from the very beginning, according to Lee County wrestling coach Chris Morton.

“The only points given up by Weston this season were escape points,” Morton said. “That’s very strong.”

This was Weston’s third straight finals appearance. He secured a fifth-place finish last year and a state runner-up finish two seasons ago.

Bryan spoke to ITG Next about finally winning it all after coming so close in those previous attempts.

“It definitely feels like all the adversity paid off and allowed me to push through and finally get the job done,” Bryan said.

Lee County head football coach Dean Fabrizio said that Bryan defines what a truly great student-athlete is all about.

“In addition to being a great athlete, Weston is a great leader and student,” Fabrizio said. “He truly is the epitome of a student-athlete.”

Bryan doesn’t have much time to celebrate his most recent sports success. As a three-sport athlete, he is ready to turn his attention to baseball.

When asked how long he has until baseball practice begins, Bryan answered, “Tomorrow (Sunday) at 3:00.”

Several Georgia high schools have named new head football coaches this offseason with the number of new hires approaching 60.

Adam Clack, Daniel “Boone” Williams, and Steve DeVoursney all made quite the impact when hired at their previous schools. The question is: Can they do it again with their new teams in 2025?

🚨 Breaking News 🚨

From Phil Jones:

ITG Next has learned that former Prince Avenue Christian School head football coach Greg Vandagriff will be named the new head football coach at Lakeway Christian Academy in White Pine, Tennessee.

Vandagriff confirmed the news earlier tonight to ITG Next and said that an official announcement is expected to come Wednesday morning at the Tennessee school.

“I felt like it was time for a change, and it’s an opportunity to go back home,” said Vandagriff, who is from Knoxville, Tennessee, located about 40 miles from White Pine. “I felt like I needed a little more freedom to do what I want to do, and this will give me the opportunity to do that.”

Vandagriff said that Lakeway Christian just finished their fifth season of football, where they compete in the Tennessee Secondary Schools Athletic Association, the state’s main governing body for high school athletics. Lakeway Christian competes in Division II-Class 2A for football.

“The football program has struggled a little bit, but that’s not that unusual for a new program,” Vandagriff said. “I am really looking forward to building Lakeway Christian into a championship-caliber program.”

If anyone knows about championships, it’s Vandagriff. He won six region titles, three state championships, and a total of 107 games during his nine seasons at Prince Avenue Christian.

In 2024, he led the Wolverines to a 10-4 record and an appearance in the GHSA Class 1A-3A Private state title game, where they finished as the runner-up.

“My first goal is to put together a really good staff here,” Vandagriff said about Lakeway Christian.

In addition to a successful coaching career, Vandagriff has just released a new book titled “Power of the Patch,” in which he draws from his own experiences as the son of a struggling father, then as a father himself, to try to motivate other dads to be better fathers.

“As a father, team is about family,” Vandagriff said. “I’m wanting to motivate dads who may not fully understand that.

“It took me three to six months to write this book. I’ve been wanting to do it since becoming a father myself, but it took me a while to make it all make sense, to make it relevant.”

Big shoutout to Buford High School wrestler DJ Clarke for being named ITG Next’s January 2025 Georgia Male Athlete of the Month!

Reflecting on his junior season, Clarke said: “My goal since the summer was not to worry about the wins and losses, but to simply become a better wrestler. Sure, I’d love to win them all, but that’s nearly impossible when you’re wrestling the best guys in the country.”

Now THAT is the mindset of a champion. 💪🤼‍♂️
