Did you know that Black History Month began as "Negro History Week" in 1926? It was established by historian Carter G. Woodson, known as the "Father of Black History." He selected the second week of February to honor the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln (February 12) and Frederick Douglass (February 14), both of whom played key roles in the abolition of slavery.

In 1976, during the United States Bicentennial, this week-long observance expanded into Black History Month, highlighting the importance of recognizing and educating others about the contributions of Black Americans to history, culture, and society.
