“This is wonderful for our town; it is wonderful for Uvalde just to be able to bring the event back. Then to receive the recognition that we did was amazing,” event chair Mario "MJ" Miller said. “This was a community event where all of us came together. The turnout was amazing that night, the luminarias were a big hit. We look forward to our 2025 event."

The American Cancer Society announced Jan. 15 that the renewed Uvalde Relay for Life is the 2024 Pat Flynn Spirit of Relay Nationwide Event of the Year. ACS said it chose the Uvalde event because it stood out by celebrating survivors and caregivers, holding a meaningful luminaria ceremony with more....

Coyotes lose to Pearsall in 56-52 basketball thriller

The Uvalde Coyotes rallied from a 33-20 halftime deficit, but their second-half comeback fell short as they lost a 56-52 basketball thriller Wednesday night at Pearsall.
Led by the 10-point scoring performance of 6-foot-5 senior forwards Xavier Rendon, the Mavericks got off to a 19-8 lead in the first period.
The Mavericks outscored the Coyotes, 14–12, in the second period to increase their lead to 13 points, 33-20, by halftime.
James Trevino downed three three-point goals and totaled 11 points for the Coyotes in the third period as the Uvaldeans cut the scoring deficit to 44-37.
Behind the scoring of Jordan Albarado and Zeke Cabralez, the Coyotes continued to chip away at the Pearsall lead in the fourth period, but the Mavericks held off Uvaldeans to escape with a four-point victory.
“The Coyotes played with a lot of heart tonight. They played hard for 32 minutes,” said Coach Ramon Buruato. “I am so proud of their fight. I love these young men. They showed me a lot tonight. I could not ask for a better group of young men.”
With the win, Pearsall maintained its spot in second place, behind Somerset, in the District 27-4A race. The Mavs now are 6-1 in district and 21-7 overall.
The Coyotes now are 0-7 in district and 8-17 for the season.
“It’s frustrating to be on a losing streak, but it says a lot about the strength of our kids to have them play so well despite the adversity we have faced this season,” said Coach Buruato. “This lets me know we are on the right path and our players understand this is a process.”
The Coyotes will be back in district action Friday when they host the Floresville Tigers, 4-2 and 10-16, in a 6:15 p.m. contest in Harvey Kinchlow Gym.
The game will feature a district rematch. On Dec. 31, the Tigers downed the Coyotes, 51-34, in action at Floresville.
James Trevino finished the Uvalde-Pearsall game Wednesday as the scoring leader for the Coyotes with 16 points.
Zeke Cabralez netted 11 points, including eight points in the second half.
Jordan Albarado totaled eight points, David Falcon III recorded five points, Javi Gonzales and Darien Navarro each posted in four points, and Jett Flores and Carlos Sierra each contributed two points.
Xavier Rendon scored 27 of Pearsall’s points, while his teammates combined efforts to score 29 points.

School Closure Announcement for Tuesday, January 21, 2025

To Our Uvalde CISD Parents, Caregivers, and Staff,
In light of the latest forecast from the National Weather Service, which predicts winter precipitation and hazardous conditions from Monday night into Tuesday morning, out of an abundance of caution, Uvalde CISD has made the decision to cancel school on Tuesday, January 21, 2025. The safety of our students, staff, and school community is of utmost importance, and we wish to avoid any risks associated with travel and outdoor exposure during these conditions.

Commitment to Education
While we uphold our commitment to quality education and student support, the well-being of our school community takes precedence. During this forecasted Winter Weather Advisory, we encourage all families to prioritize safety and take the necessary precautions during this inclement weather.

Wednesday School Schedule
Our dedicated team will assess road conditions on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, as early as 5:00 a.m. We will thoroughly evaluate roads across the community to ensure safe passage. If some routes, such as overpasses, are inaccessible, we will consider alternative safe bus routes.

Decision Timeline: If severe weather persists, the decision to close or delay school will be made by 4:00 p.m. the day before. If conditions improve, decisions will be made as early as possible in the morning, with notifications sent by 6:00 a.m. on the day of school.

Communication: Once a decision is reached, we will communicate through email, our District website at www.ucisd.net, social media, and local media outlets to ensure comprehensive coverage.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we navigate this winter weather together. We are committed to our children's education and safety and appreciate our community's continued support. Please visit the UCISD website to review the National Weather Situation Report for further details.
