Published in 1996 during the Sentinel’s centennial celebration:

Written by Fred Gaskins, Publisher of Rappahannock Press, Inc. "In the future… will there still be a paper to curl up with in your favorite easy chair? Past futurists predicted the end of newspapers when radios invaded every household, and again when television saturated the airways. Particularly in rural areas like ours, we predict

the traditional newspaper will be around many more years, along with electronic versions you can read on your “wrist receiver.”

That’s one prediction. In reality, your guess is as good as ours, but the Sentinel will continue to deliver the local news as conveniently as possible. Of course, we’re assuming everyone will still know how to read in 2096."

Inside the Southside Sentinel’s Oct. 31 print edition is a special 28-page preview section spotlighting the Friday and Saturday, Nov. 1 and 2, Urbanna Oyster Festival. The section is chock-full of must read information for all festival goers.

Its cover features this year’s festival poster, which depicts the famed, Deltaville-based buyboat, the F.D. Crockett. The poster drawing was created by Carter Helmandollar of Moseley.

Seizing an opportunity to show off a little, Helmandollar posted on Facebook showing the process of creating the artwork: https://www.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=1534578997414073&id=100025859630377&mibextid=CmRSLE&rdid=oKH5rIOYakWBILc5.

One edition remains for campaign letters

The Thursday, Oct. 24 Southside Sentinel will be the final edition including letters to the editor commenting on positions of candidates seeking office, campaigns, political party endorsements or otherwise commenting on the ballot process regarding the Nov. 5 election.

Frequent contributors are reminded no more than two election-related letters from the same writer will be published and letters from the same writer will not be published in consecutive issues. The Southside Sentinel editorial department enforces a 400-word maximum length on all letters.

No letters will be published from the candidates unless it is considered necessary by the editor to correct any misrepresentations, and then only on Oct. 31. Such letters will be limited solely to correcting the misrepresentations. They also will be subject to the 400-word maximum and other guidelines.

Letters are due by 11 a.m. on Tuesdays. Paid political advertisements are welcome at any time in the Southside Sentinel; contact Gloria Abbott, 804-758-2328, ext. 103, or [email protected].

Late Lansdowne preservationist Diane Gravatt will be honored with the Middlesex County Museum and Historical Society’s annual Preservation Award at a fall fundraiser set for 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13 at Historic Rosegill. Dr. Gordon Blaine Steffey, Historic Stratford Hall’s Arthur Lee historian, will be the guest speaker.

During the afternoon’s festivities, the award will be presented to retired Col. A.B. Gravatt III in honor of his late wife, Diane Gravatt, for her hard work and diligence in the preservation of Lansdowne. They completely restored the historic residence after purchasing the house and property on Virginia Street in the heart of Urbanna in 1998. The Gravatts commitment to the heritage of the house and its story is at the heart of why the Middlesex County Museum has a Preservation Award honoring local stewards of Middlesex history. Lansdowne was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974 as one of Virginia’s finest examples of Georgian architecture due to its colonial design and quality craftsmanship.

Built by Ralph Wormeley III of Rosegill, Lansdowne was purchased and became the residence of diplomat Arthur Lee (1740-1792), the youngest son of Thomas Lee of Stratford Hall. Lee helped to negotiate and signed the 1778 Treaty of Alliance, which allied France and the United States together during the American Revolutionary War.

Lee retired to the home in 1791 and died in residence in 1792. He is buried on the property. Lansdowne was then inherited by his two older brothers, both signers of the Declaration of Independence, Richard Henry Lee and Francis Lightfoot Lee.

The fall fundraiser and award presentation will be conducted at Historic Rosegill’s barn, located at 1824 Urbanna Road near Urbanna. Appetizers wine and beer will be served. Tickets are $35 for members and $45 for nonmembers or at the door. Tickets may be purchased online at middlesexmuseum.com.

To Bishop or Not To Bishop

Everyone calls him “Father Jeff” or just plain “Jeff.” He is The Venerable Jeffrey S. Johnson, the well-loved priest at the All Saints Anglican Church in Saluda, since being instituted as rector in 2014. In June of this year, he was elected to become a bishop in the Anglican Catholic Church.

The position of bishop was not a position he sought. Following that election he said, “If you had asked me if I would be the bishop elect even a few months ago, I would have said absolutely not! But we must be open to serving Christ whenever, wherever, and however He calls us. He called through the election, and I will serve Him and the diocese with everything I’ve got in me.”

Indeed, the parishioners of All Saints were emotionally torn between two possible outcomes with the election. On the one hand, they all knew Fr. Jeff’s strong leadership skills and gifts for spreading God’s word and knew he would be a wonderful asset to all the churches in the diocese. On the other hand, they were concerned about losing his presence as the shepherd of the All Saints flock.

Along with his wife of 44 years, Fr. Jeff made the decision to accept the selection and will be consecrated as bishop this Saturday, Oct. 12, at St. Alban’s Anglican Church, 4006 Hermitage Road, Richmond, Virginia at 10 a.m. All are welcome to attend.

When asked about his thoughts or vision for serving as bishop ordinary, Fr. Johnson replied, “We live in challenging times. Today more than ever it is imperative for us to stand firm on God’s Truth against the high winds of social change. I am looking forward to serving and working with all clergy and laity of DMAS (Dioceses of the Mid-Atlantic States) to protect our heritage of worshiping God while also looking for creative solutions to grow into the future, keeping our parishes as vibrant bastions of our beautiful traditional worship and loving fellowship in the Body of Christ.”

The community is encouraged to come out and cheer the Chargers on during the 5:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11 Middlesex High School (MHS) homecoming parade through Saluda. During last year’s parade, the Charger mascot led the band in the parade.

The parade will start at the Middlesex County Historic Courthouse and proceed northwest on General Puller Highway (Route 17 Business) to MHS.

The road will be closed to regular vehicle traffic from the traffic light to MHS. Traffic will be detoured around the closed section.

Hundreds are expected to line General Puller Highway in Saluda to cheer on the Chargers.

Later in the evening, Middlesex will take on the West Point Pointers in homecoming football action on Bristow-Boxley Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

MHS will crown its homecoming queen and king during the game’s halftime, following the presentation of the MHS homecoming court.

After the football game, there is usually a student dance in John S. Clements Memorial Gymnasium that concludes at 10:30 p.m.

The Water View Bluegrass Band (pictured) and other musicians will entertain you with a special bluegrass and classic country music concert set for 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12 at the Middlesex Volunteer Fire Department station (the Urbanna firehouse) at 335 Virginia St. in Urbanna.

Admission is free, but donations are accepted and will go to the Middlesex Volunteer Fire Department and Auxiliary.

“I can't think of a better way to spend a Saturday night!” concert organizer June Williams said in an email to the Sentinel.
For information, email Williams at [email protected].

The bluegrass concerts are usually offered the first Saturday of the month, but the October one was moved to the second Saturday of the month because the One Community Under God event was using the firehouse Oct. 5.

The one this coming Saturday will be the last one of the season. Organizers are still weighing whether or not to resume the series in spring 2025.
