Kambia Residents Applaud President Bio’s Government for Bridging the Information Gap

Kambia, Sierra Leone – Residents of Kambia District have lauded the government of President Julius Maada Bio for its efforts in strengthening communication between the government and the people. Activists, journalists, and other stakeholders in the district praised the Ministry of Information and Civic Education for facilitating a two-day dialogue on critical national development issues.

The Civic Day Series, an initiative of the Ministry of Information and Civic Education, provided a platform for engagement between government officials and citizens. The first day featured a Quiz and Debate competition, bringing together school pupils and young people to deliberate on significant topics such as the importance of the national census, the influence of technology on children, and the role of civic education in combating corruption.

The second day saw a four-hour town hall meeting, where community stakeholders engaged directly with senior government officials. Among the officials present were the Attorney General, Minister of Local Government, Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Statistician General, and Energy Sector Lead Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella. Discussions centered on key national issues, including border security, energy, constitutional review, and decentralization.

Local residents expressed their appreciation for the initiative. “I am so happy for this engagement; this is democracy in action,” said Ibrahim Kamara, a motorbike rider. A disability advocate added, “To talk openly and freely with all these government leaders? This has never happened here in Kambia. We usually only see gatherings like this during elections. I am happy that this event took place.”

Government representatives also provided critical updates, including the Deputy Minister of Agriculture’s progress report on the Feed Salone initiative and Kambia’s role in it. The Statistician-General emphasized the importance of the census and its potential to create opportunities, while the Minister of Local Government made a major announcement regarding plans to create additional districts for more effective governance.

Youth participation was a key component of the engagement, with senior secondary school students taking part in a debate on national development topics. Community leaders described the Civic Day Series as one of the most impactful programs held in Kambia in recent years, urging the government to replicate it across the country.

The Ministry of Information and Civic Education remains committed to fostering dialogue between the government and the people, ensuring that citizens remain informed and engaged in national development initiatives.
