SLeSHI Concludes Three-Day Facility Assessment Training in Port Loko

Port Loko, Sierra Leone – The Sierra Leone Social Health Insurance Scheme (SLeSHI) has successfully concluded a three-day training on facility assessment processes in Port Loko, located in the north-western region of the country. This initiative is part of ongoing efforts to enhance the health financing system and ensure the effective implementation of the SLeSHI Scheme nationwide.

Similar trainings have previously been conducted in Kenema, Bo, and Makeni, reinforcing the government’s commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure. Chief Minister Dr. David Sengeh Advocates for Social Media Monetization in Sierra Leone During Engagement with Elcome
Dubai, United Arab Emirates – Wednesday, 12 February 2025

Sierra Leone’s Chief Minister, Dr. David Moinina Sengeh, has met with the leadership of Elcome International LLC to explore opportunities for expanding internet access across the country as part of the government’s ongoing digital transformation initiatives.

During the discussions, Dr. Sengeh, who also serves as Sierra Leone’s Chief Innovation Officer, emphasized the need for monetizing social media content, ensuring that Sierra Leonean content creators benefit financially from their work. He highlighted that while the country has the necessary platforms for mobile money and electronic payments, collaboration with major social media executives is crucial to unlocking monetization opportunities.

“Our people create, share, and engage with content daily, yet they do not earn from it. His Excellency, President Dr. Julius Maada Bio, has prioritized not only expanding internet connectivity but also ensuring that our citizens can generate income through digital platforms. If content creators earn revenue, they will be more willing to pay for internet services, creating a mutually beneficial ecosystem. We are committed to engaging with global partners to support this vision,” Dr. Sengeh stated.

Minister of Communication, Technology, and Innovation, Ms. Salima Bah, echoed these sentiments, stressing that monetizing digital content would create employment opportunities and enhance digital skills among young people. She affirmed the government’s commitment to fostering deeper collaborations with international stakeholders to make internet access more affordable and accessible for all citizens. Ms. Bah is expected to continue discussions with key digital platforms on the sidelines of the ongoing summit.

Elcome International LLC’s Managing Director, Jimmy Grewal, reaffirmed the company's commitment to bridging digital divides by providing cutting-edge technology solutions and internet access to underserved communities. He noted that Elcome’s experience in delivering connectivity solutions to some of the world’s most remote regions could help address Sierra Leone’s connectivity challenges.

“Our primary goal is to connect people—whether to their families, businesses, or essential government services. We are eager to leverage our expertise and work alongside Sierra Leone to support its ambitious digitalization agenda,” Grewal stated.

Elcome International LLC, headquartered in Dubai, is a global leader in technology solutions, with over 55 years of experience in providing innovative connectivity solutions. The company has expressed strong interest in investing in Sierra Leone’s technology sector, further reinforcing the government’s commitment to advancing digital inclusion and economic growth.

Mobile Money Companies Applaud Central Bank’s Instant Payment System

Freetown, Sierra Leone – Mobile money operators have commended the Central Bank’s introduction of an instant payment system, a key component of the national switch initiative. The system enables seamless transactions between mobile wallets and bank accounts, enhancing financial inclusion and efficiency.

Bank Governor Dr. Ibrahim Stevens revealed that the initiative has been in development since 2008 but only received the necessary support in 2023 to move forward.

“This system allows users to transfer funds instantly between mobile operators and directly between mobile wallets and bank accounts,” Dr. Stevens explained.

Leading mobile money services, including Orange Money and Afri Money, have welcomed the development, emphasizing its potential to streamline business operations and improve service delivery.

Martison Obeng-Agyei, CEO of Afri Money, hailed the initiative as a game-changer for the financial sector. “With interoperability now in place, I can shut down my independent banking connection system, reducing operational costs. Lower costs mean we can offer better services to customers,” he stated.

David Mansaray, CEO of Orange Money, highlighted the broader economic impact, particularly in facilitating access to credit. “Many individuals struggle to obtain loans due to a lack of credit history. This system will revolutionize banking and business transactions in the long term,” he noted.

Mansaray also emphasized the significance of the initiative for Sierra Leone. “Not many small economies in Africa have implemented a national switch system. The fact that Sierra Leone is adopting it is a major milestone. We should take pride in this achievement,” he remarked.

The Bank Governor further announced that the official launch of the service would take place today, with seven banks already integrated into the system, alongside the two leading mobile money operators. The Central Bank aims to onboard all financial institutions by the end of March, further strengthening the country’s digital financial ecosystem.
