You know what? I think they're right! Think about it. Presidents of both parties are always going into some midwestern industrial town and promising money to create new steel jobs, auto jobs, semi-conductor jobs, and train people for new high-tech jobs. DULL, DULL, DULL. I say, go to those same towns but promise to invest $3 Billion a year in new movies and TV shows to create movie star jobs. Announce you're partnering with dozens of independent studios to finance, like, 3,000 new low-budget movies or limited-run streaming series...each with a big, ensemble cast of, say, 10 or more featured rolls. So you're creating 30,000 new movie/TV stars. (Plus a thousand screenwriting gigs. Two thousand if you hire teams!) Voters could really get excited about that.

Job training: Give 'em all acting lessons and some career guidance. (Headshots, too. How much could that cost?) Make each one a SAG or AFTRA gig so they'd get healthcare for a year. Plus craft services to feed all those low-income actors. (Child actors eat free, too!) It's a perfect social welfare program!!! Then there's all the network and studio exec jobs that would be created, all the agents, all the set designers and gaffers and best boy jobs. All the stunt people. It's a job creator's wet dream! Sure, movie acting jobs only last 10-12 weeks. But hell, you'd be turning regular Americans into MOVIE STARS. Who's not gonna vote for that?!

On this week's More Perfect Union podcast, I talked about JFK's 1962 press conference in which he took on U.S. Steel for price hikes that Kennedy believed were inflationary and anti-competitive. Here's a link to the audio of that press conference. It's an amazing performance by a president and you should give it a listen. If you are too young to remember JFK in office, you'll discover why he is so highly regarded by historians and those of us who do remember him.

In this press conference, which was very controversial at the time, the president wasn't afraid to speak out against corporate greed and how company's should act not just in the interest of profits, but in what's best for their country. He posed it as a question of patriotism – something I wish more recent presidents had done in similar circumstances. Inflation is caused 10% by presidential policy and 90% by world supplies, supply chains, materials shortages, and flagrant corporate greed. Capitalism suggests that the free market should be able to set whatever price they can sustain, but Kennedy said no, setting fair prices are as much a matter of honor and patriotism as going off to war for your country.

Check it out. I think you'll be glad you did.

Some key facts about the strength of the American economy:
–More than 53,000 restaurants opened last year, up 10 percent from 2022 and exceeding pre-pandemic levels, according to data from online review site Yelp. That has helped boost hiring across the board, in entry-level positions as well as managerial roles.
–Americans are spending big on vacations, dining out and entertainment. And that demand is driving employers to hire in those sectors.
–Hourly wages have been beating inflation since last May, after years of falling behind.
–The unemployment rate fell to 3.8 percent last month, extending the longest stretch of unemployment below 4 percent in decades.
–Construction added 39,000 jobs in March, more than double its monthly average gain of the past 12 months, showing surprising strength in the face of higher interest rates. Nonresidential specialty trade contractors led gains.
–Construction added 39,000 jobs in March, more than double its monthly average gain of the past 12 months, showing surprising strength in the face of higher interest rates. Nonresidential specialty trade contractors led gains.

So, if anyone tells you the U.S. economy is struggling or in free fall, they are lying to you. There are always - Always - pockets of concern in a national economy. But the American economy of 2024 is the envy of the world.

The jobs market is charging ahead in 2024 after a gradual cooling for much of past year in response to soaring interest rates.

As a writer, I always had this weird knack for tying threads of a story together. In standup and sketch comedy, they are known as callbacks. In literature, it's foreshadowing. But I found I could artificially create foreshadowing just by bringing back something or someone I thought was a one-off when I wrote it. In "Things We Shouldn't Do," I'm particularly fond of how I was able to tie all three separate novellas together into one by reintroducting characters from an entirely new perspective. I won't tell you which ones – part of the fun of the book is being surprised at who comes back and how. (I even surprised myself!) I hope you'll make it through all three stories because they really tie up nicely, if I do say so myself. And the journeys of the three FMC – one in her 20s, 30s and 40s – tie together in a unifying theme of how human sexuality changes as we age. Malone, Charlsie and Elle couldn't be more different. But their individual journeys blend into one seamless story of love and regret, mistakes and forgiveness, vanity and self-growth.

I know that politics is hardball. But the blatant lie about the economy that the RW media has turned into an alternative truth is incredibly unfair. The US economy is thriving. And JB deserves credit for that. He also has the best legislative record of any president since LBJ, and a strong foreign policy record as well. Dems and progressives should be proud to cast their vote for him.

https://www.reuters.com/markets/us/us-fourth-quarter-growth-revised-up-weekly-jobless-claims-fall-2024-03-28/?fbclid=IwAR0MQFKwfvT3TEtKILfDQgJ6EgPCQXkyKfs4f27is81TO6CS3mgqoYu7CM0_aem_AW7oMKCkOzvJpGe6-D1YEriAMctAKud0CEAA6OCQzP9fUlgDIqIT0KFttbOIIIln6drl0-5kq7oOyJ_fOyxfqWnd

The U.S. economy grew faster than previously estimated in the fourth quarter, boosted by strong consumer spending and business investment in nonresidential structures like factories and healthcare facilities.

If the Special Counsel and Fulton County DA's office cannot bring DT in front of a jury of his peers before the election, here's my idea. Some Hollywood producers and actors should quickly produce a low budget docudrama acting out the trials using publicly available facts and evidence. Get a couple of courtroom sets, some actors like DeNiro and Mark Rufalo who would do it for free (as a public service), and produce a couple of mock trials. Imagine the potential stunt casting. Maybe even cast real attorneys who have some media notoriety. This same thing was done with the mock Lee Harvey Oswald trial that real DA Vincent Bugliosi prosecuted on TV. I'd do the three trials either intercut in one movie length production or in a three-part series.

Then stream it on Netflix or Apple and let the public SEE and HEAR the abundance of evidence that is publicly available. They can even use real cutaways of the real DT seated at a defense table, ostensibly following along, since those news clips are in the public domain under the Fair Use Doctrine. It's the best way to show the public what might have in a real trial and why it's relevant to their vote.

A real trial bringing real justice would be preferable. But absent that, this might be the next best thing.
