Silent Film From London To Paris By Air by SVE Jessie A Levinson
Handley Page Type O G-EASN

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Handley_Page_Type_O

The Handley Page Type O was a biplane bomber used by Britain during the First World War. When built, the Type O was the largest aircraft that had been built in the UK and one of the largest in the world. There were two main variants, the Handley Page O/100 (H.P.11) and the Handley Page O/400 (H.P.12).

The aircraft were used in France for tactical night attacks on targets in German-occupied France and Belgium and for strategic bombing of industrial and transport targets in the Rhineland. Some aircraft were temporarily diverted to anti-submarine reconnaissance and bombing in the Tees estuary in 1917 and two aircraft operated in the eastern Mediterranean. The Type O made such an impression that for many years after the war any large aircraft in Britain was referred to as a "Handley Page", even getting a dictionary entry.

After the war, O/400s remained in squadron service until replaced by the Vickers Vimy toward the end of 1919. War-surplus aircraft were converted for civilian use in the UK and nine were used by Handley Page Transport. Eight O/400s were fitted to carry passengers and operated by 86 (Communication) Wing from Hendon, to provide transport between London and Paris for the officials negotiating the Treaty of Versailles. Two were fitted as VIP transports and finished in silver dope, named Great Britain and Silver Star and the others, seating eight, retained their dark green finish.

Six aircraft were sold to the Republic of China as O/7 transports, and following delivery to China were re-assembled at Nanyuan, near Beijing. The aircraft flew their first airmail and passengers between Beijing and Tientsin on 7 May 1920. Civil war disrupted these services and they were taken over by various warlords.

Cancelation of the 2021 Miramar Air Show

Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Miramar and Marine Corps Community Services (MCCS) Miramar regretfully cancels the 2021 Miramar Air Show due to the public health risks associated with COVID-19.

The Miramar Air Show is the largest military air show in the world and is typically one of the largest single public events in San Diego, drawing in upwards of half a million guests and spectators from around the globe every year.

Due to uncertainty surrounding the spread of coronavirus across our communities, Col. Charles Dockery, Commanding Officer of MCAS Miramar, made the decision to suspend this fall’s scheduled event and look to begin the early planning for a show in 2022.

“The Miramar Air Show brings in aviation and military enthusiasts from every corner of the world. And, while San Diego continues to lead the way in vaccines and beginning to reopen, there are still a great many risks involved with a gathering on the scale of our air show. MCAS Miramar has always prioritized our community’s safety throughout the pandemic, beginning the moment we hosted evacuees from Wuhan to our daily operations delivering National Defense, and this decision is no different. It remains the right choice to look ahead to 2022 and make it better than ever.”

Good Afternoon BlueAngels fans! Check out this video of Lt. Cmdr. Cary Rickoff, Blue Angel #6, conducting a training flight over NAF El Centro, CA and the Imperial Valley with Cmdr. Ben Walborn, Blue Angel #5!

Below you can find a detailed breakdown of the maneuvers you see in the video!

Before integrating with the #1 - #4 pilots to form the signature Delta formation, the solo pilots will practice their famous opposing maneuvers together.

0:00 Lt. Cmdr Rickoff performs his first maneuver, the Low Transition to Immelman on take off. The maneuver begins from takeoff as he retracts his landing gear, maintaining minimum distance from the ground, then executes a high performance climb, followed by a half-loop.

23:27 Next you see #6 executing a high G-force pull from behind the crowd, in order to expeditiously rendezvous with #5 for the next maneuver.

32:24 The next maneuver is the Opposing Horizontal Roll. This maneuver requires #5 and #6 to perform two consecutive rolls, followed by the selection of max afterburner and execute a 7G pull to a vertical climb.

1:06:19 The final maneuver of every show is the Pitch-Up Break (PUB). The PUB requires #1 - #6 to pitch up and away from the Delta Formation to deconflict their flight path. As they individually breakaway from the Delta Formation, they turn downwind, slowing down their aircraft in preparation for landing.

Flat-Hatting is a form of flying that discourages longevity. Originally the term simply meant flying low needlessly. That definition has been expanded to include grandstanding, or showing off-flying foolishly and carelessly. The term itself is said to have arisen from and incident in which the wheel of a low-flying plane struck a pedestrian on the head and crushed a new top hat he was wearing.
