On Saturday, September 28, 2024, dublab celebrated its quarter centennial at Zebulon Taking over the beloved Frogtown venue with 25 DJs, a host of live performances, and engaging visual artwork by Alex Pelly, offering a multistage event that showcased the station’s homegrown talent. dublab’s annual anniversary parties also serve as crucial fundraising opportunities, and this year was no exception. Today on Celsius Drop hosted by Frosty: Pearl & The Oysters from 6p-8p PST

Pearl & The Oysters is the French-American duo of Juliette Pearl Davis and Joachim Po**ck. The pair met at high school in Paris and immediately bonded over their mutual love for ‘70s jazz and ‘90s space age pop. They have been writing and performing together ever since, and moved across the Atlantic together in 2015.

After the release of Coast 2 Coast, their first album for Stones Throw in 2023, the duo are back with a new album Planet Pearl this September. While Coast 2 Coast documented L.A. with a breezy, AOR-inspired sound, their new album Planet Pearl is extra-terrestrial, written from the perspective of castaway space explorers marooned on Earth. Its heavier subjects include mental health and the feeling of being “literal outsiders everywhere we go”. But no matter how melancholic or alienated they feel, Juju and Jojo always see the fun side, channeling their feelings into "depressed disco" or jazz-pop joy. Planet Pearl is out now on Stones Throw!

For the month of November, Peak Oil had a special guest double-header featuring D.C. collective, Lifted and Brian Close on their show Tipping Point, a monthly journey through the record collections, leaving no good genre unturned, enjoy two hours of esoterica, conversation and guests.

Fresh off the release of Lifted’s Trellis LP via Peak Oil Records, they’ve shared an hour-long live performance for this episode.

The core duo of Max D and Matt Papich debut on Peak Oil following full-lengths for and PAN with a fresh suite of tactile, diffuse fusion. Half the collection emerged from a 2021 session at Tempo House rounded out by Dustin Wong, Mezey, and Jeremy Hyman, while the rest took shape in moments both collaborative and isolated, collaged together with CDJs into something more liquid and liminal than the sum of its parts.

In the second hour, Brian Close—known for his work with Georgia—delivers an exclusive set of all-original, unreleased material.

Fathomers presents The Lab Behind the Artworks, featuring Callie Ryan and Dustin Wong

When Fathomers reached out to us to help curate musical activations in response to their evocative exhibition, Emergence: Art From Life, we were honored to collaborate once again with such a wonderful team. From 3pm – 4:30pm, experience two sonic interpretations of the exhibition by .01 (DJ set) and (live performance) as part of PST ART Weekend: DTLA

Emergence is singular among PST ART exhibitions for its presentation of living biological artworks and projects created in collaboration with a global cohort of synthetic biologists and medical researchers. Visitors will encounter human bones grown from synthetic mother-of-pearl; objects dyed with bioengineered indigo pigment; and living, microscopic human tear glands that cry.

For PST ART Weekend, join Fathomers for a behind-the-scenes look at the making of Emergence. Take a special tour with curator Stacy Switzer of the biology lab built expressly for the exhibition. Learn about the daily choreographies of maintenance required to sustain the microorganism life behind the artworks from the technicians extending these acts of care. Close out the day with a musical hour curated by dublab in response to the provocations of Emergence as you walk through the galleries.
