Brynmorgen Press is proud to make a pre-publication announcement of a forthcoming book that we think will be of interest to members of this group. In the spring of 2024 we will release Jewelry Technology in the Ancient & Medieval World by noted British expert Jack Ogden. This important book is impressive in several ways, first for it’s broad span, which ranges from early Egyptian metalwork through the late Middle Ages; next for the breadth of information, drawn from period writings in many languages and hands-on examination of hundreds of objects over the course of a five-decade career. Weighing in at 400+ pages with more than 700 color photographs, this hardcover book will be a mainstay of research and information for collectors, curators, and anyone interested in the origins of jewelry and the tools and techniques used by goldsmiths around the world today.

These illustrations, pulled from the book, provide examples of the diversity, wealth of information and clarity of descriptions that are typical throughout the book.

Brynmorgen Press is pleased to announce the publication of an important new book by three-time Brynmorgen author, Matthieu Cheminée. “Inadan: The Mastery of Tuareg Artisans” is a massive book by any measure. For starters, the book is a large format, 9” by 12” hardcover full-color book, 328 pages, and more than 1250 photos.

This book captures, in fine detail, the history and making of 40 Tuareg objects that range from silver jewelry to leather bags and include carved stone bracelets, hand-forged hammers, leather bellows and delicate silver spoons. In many cases, skills needed to make these traditional objects are at risk of disappearing from the culture as master artisans grow older.

"Inadan" is therefore an archive for Tuareg craftspeople who come later. And consistent with that, the photos and words in this book come from the Tuareg Inadan themselves because the entire book was compiled during the Covid pandemic when travel to the region was not possible.

We still have snow in the woods here in Maine, but the ice is off the pond and we’re beginning to think about summer. I’m excited to return to Penland where I’ll be co-teaching with Matthieu Cheminée. Here’s a description and a link to more details.

METALS SUMMER SESSION 6JULY 30–AUGUST 11, 2023
Matthieu Cheminée and Tim McCreightBuilding on Basics
Between us, we have been making jewelry for 80 years, each in our own way exploring basic materials and techniques that have been central to metalsmiths for centuries. In this workshop students will revisit basics: pouring ingots, making sheet and wire, and using forging, piercing, and fabrication to create original wearables and utensils. After making their own unique stamps, gravers, and chisels, students will make jewelry that captures the materials and moments of Penland. Through group demonstrations and one-on-one conversations, each student will merge material, technique, and process to chart a path that makes their work meaningful and distinctive.

Where were you in 2014? My calendar tells me that nine years ago I announced the release of the iBook edition of “Complete Metalsmith.” Personally I’m a big fan of digital publications, but I understand that many people prefer a traditional book printed on paper. Hey — why not have both! Each version has its benefits, as I try to explain from that day long ago.

After 30 years as a printed book, Tim McCreight's "Complete Metalsmith" is now also available in a digital edition. The full text, recently updated, and here...
