Hobby woodworker on a journey to expand my skills in the craft and share interesting content along the way. My name is Chris Olsen.
I am a full-time veterinarian with a passion for woodworking. I started creating video content in my woodshop to not only entertain but also share what I have learned in my woodworking journey. I am largely self-taught in the craft and am eager to continue my pursuit of becoming the best woodworker I can be. It’s mail day 📦📬
These coaster sets and an end grain cutting board are headed out to the winning bidders of a silent auction fundraiser held at the recent annual conference.
Nice little garage sale find made for a good nine-finger approved project. My thumb is healing up well and I’ll be back at full strength before long 👍🏼
After cleaning my mini split I’m working on a style filter box to help keep it that way for years to come. Fun little project to putz around the shop and work on.
Someone it’s the little things that excite me like new shop ✏️ and 🥽. 😀
Now we’re getting somewhere. First coat of water based primer on these two sections.
Just another woodworking project that is taking far longer than estimated, making progress though! I still need to cut backs and make the false tops. It feels good to be prepping the cases for finish!
Back in the shop for the first time in a couple of weeks and my dust collector switch quit working. Grateful that I had the materials on hand for a quick fix. Don’t take this as electrical advice, it’s just what worked for me. I bypassed the stock switch with jumper wires and am using a remote plug to turn it on and off.
I enjoyed a nice walk in the woods today listening to the birds and admiring the flowers, trees and especially the fungi. Found just enough Morels to keep me coming back.
I think I’ve officially caught the milling bug. This was a lot of fun and now I want to do more 😁
Next up, mill roughly 143 LINEAR FEET(!!) of soft maple face frame stock.
First pizza on the pizza peel I recently made. 🍕 is ain’t nobody got time to make that haha.
I cut six sheets of plywood into 20 smaller pieces of plywood. Next I will cut them into even smaller pieces before gluing them back together into bigger pieces again.
10 sheets of plywood and 30 board feet of soft maple from picked up today and stacked in the shop for my next big project. This will become 33 linear feet of bookshelves for a custom project I’m doing. This will be the biggest project I’ve ever done so it should be a fun challenge.
I went through this bandsaw head to toe and and tuned it per Snodgrass method. The stock guides leave much to be desired and the blade has more flutter than I think it should but despite that, it cuts. I managed to resaw a 1/16” veneer from this 3.5” walnut. Not bad for a rookie.
3/8” 3tpi blade.
I’m grateful to add a few new tools to my shop 😁
My previous table saw had a broken part that couldn’t be replaced so I’ve been planning on purchasing a SawStop for a while now. The universe was listening apparently and a listing came up locally for a used saw in the exact configuration I planned on buying. When I went to look at it, the guy had other tools he wanted gone too!
In all I got the table saw, a 14” bandsaw, and a router table with Triton 3.25hp router, and a bunch of accessories for half of what I would have paid for a new SawStop. Needless to say I’m quite excited 😊
🙏
👀 is it just me or is something missing here?? 🤔
Pizza peel blank in the clamps. All Walnut because pizza deserves the best, no matter what kind.
Happy New Year, friends! I hope your 2023 is filled with people and activities that you find fulfilling. For me, this chainsaw mill will be one of those things. Can’t wait to try it out!
Sorry, no countdown of top posts here because I don’t understand why anyone cares how many views/likes someone else’s post got. Maybe I’m just an old grump 🤷🏼♂️
Just a pic of my shop as it sits today where a lot of work will be done in 2023! Get ready for it.
Let’s see if I remember how to use any of these tools. It’s been a while. Feels good to be back :)
Did you ever wonder why my logo has a pig in it? I am a veterinarian in the pork production industry and today am volunteering with the at the food stand at the . We will grill and serve nearly 5,000 on a stick, 1,000 slices of along with many other dishes. Stop by and see us if you’re at the fair!
It was great to be outside helping a friend build a deck today! We almost finished the decking and have railing and stairs to do after.
One of the things I really appreciate about woodworking is the story of a tree turned into furniture. This Walnut grew off 14th st just south of the Des Moines river in Des Moines, IA. It was sawn locally, dried in my basement and so far turned into two desktops and two craft paper holders, both for the same family. Someday I’ll have my own sawmill and will be able to see the whole process through myself!
I believe a Hodgepodge is the correct term to describe the clamps used to glue this craft paper rack together.
Detail sanding by hand is one of the times I feel the most “zoned in” while woodworking. It really engages the senses, the feel of the wood texture, smell of the sawdust, visual changes as you work through grits. It’s not the most gratifying or exciting task, it does force you to slow down though and sometimes that is what is needed. Especially for my ADHD mind.
Sometimes a few hours of work takes weeks to get done. I’m chipping away at these craft paper holders a little at a time and they will get done!
I spent a relaxing hour in the shop yesterday finishing the milling and glueing a few parts for the walnut craft paper holders I’m making. They will start taking shape from here.
I started a fun new project yesterday. I’m making two wall mounted racks that will each hold a roll of craft paper, swipe ➡️ to see the design.
I started by measuring and marking out the parts. The rough lumber is then cut down to rough size. Next I used the jointer to mill one face flat and one edge square.

New home for my clamps! Can’t beat a good project.

Don’t toss that bottle of #CAglue with the crusted on lid. Try these inexpensive precision tip bottles to store your glue in instead. #shoptips #itlsaveyoumoney #woodworkingandstuff
I’m close to finishing up this built-in closet. Then I get to start on the second identical one 😛 #custombuiltins #itsforthekids #customcloset #biscuitsmakemehungry
I won’t tell you how long it took for me to realize these were in there. All good now 😎 #itsfixednow #dustcollectionfail #itstheworst #whydoeswoodhavetobedusty #thanksforwatchingmedostuff
My finishing process for end grain cutting boards is not what you will typically see on the interwebs. I use a food safe polyurethane instead of mineral oil. This results in a permanent, water resistant finish that does not need reconditioning. 1. I flood one side until the poly starts wicking through the full thickness of the 2” thick board. 2. Flip it over and flood the other side until it stops soaking up finish. 3. Wipe off excess with a dry rag, you will have to do this several times for 30-60 minutes, especially on the bottom. 4. Let cure for several days then I will apply a final very thin coat without building a film on the surface. 5. Enjoy for a lifetime of use! #doitrightthefirsttime #finishingprocess #garagewoodshop #woodworkingshop #learnwoodworking #diywoodworking #endgraincuttingboard #butcherblock
I flatten my end grain cutting boards with the planer. Sacrificial boards glued on each end prevents tear out of the end grain. Take very light passes and I’ve never had an issue. I’ll stick with this method until I get a router sled from @cleancutwoodworking 😀 #endgraincuttingboard #whiteoak #garagewoodshop #woodworkingshop #learnwoodworking #diywoodworking #cuttingboard

Aggressive start to the new year. Slicing through 3 sheets of 3/4” melamine in one pass. No problem for the TS75. #tracksaw #festool #garagewoodshop #woodworkingshop #learnwoodworking #diywoodworking
About as simple as it gets when it comes to assembling this vanity cabinet. No joinery, no glue, just screws. When installed, no screws will be visible anywhere even on the inside of the cabinet. 1 1/4” cabinet screws from @fastcapllc through the outside on panels that go against the wall, @kregjig pocket hole screws on visible parts. #woodworkingshop #learnwoodworking #garagewoodshop #basementfinishing #woodworkingtool #finishedbasement #diywoodworking #trimcarpentry #diybasement
A couple doors in the basement needed to be cut down after the carpet was installed. A track saw and TSO guide rail square made the job super easy. I am grateful to have the tools and ability to accomplish these tasks! #woodworkingshop #learnwoodworking #garagewoodshop #basementfinishing #diyhomeimprovement #woodworkingtool #finishedbasement #diywoodworking #homeupdates #homeupgrade #trimcarpentry #diybasement #tracksaw
Quick coat of primer in the baseboards and casing. I’ll start working on installation tomorrow. #basementfinishing #trimcarpentry #diybasement #learnwoodworking #doorinstallation #airlesssprayer
I’ve watched enough @idahopainter and @platinumfuturespainting videos to at least make it look like I know what I’m doing 😉 Basement is primed, I’m still waiting on trim materials to arrive so might go ahead and get one coat of top coat down before I start working on trim. #basementfinishing #gracopaintsprayers #airlesssprayer #diybasement #diyhomeimprovement
I said I wasn’t doing drywall for our basement finish project but I did have to take some down where we added outlets and reinstall it before the finishing crew comes. Not my favorite job but this rotary tool is kinda fun for cutting around outlet boxes 👍🏼 #basementfinishing #finishedbasement #drywallinstallation
I salvaged an old yoga mat to use as a sanding pad. Had to test it out to make sure it still worked. Maybe workbench yoga will be the next big thing 🤷🏼♂️ #crowpose #yoga #yogaintheshop #woodshopyoga
Yesterday I showed how I installed the door side of these euro-style cup hinges. Even more frustrating for me on other projects has been getting the mounting plate on the cabinet side positioned just right. Especially with three hinges per door I wanted an easy way to drill the mounting holes in exactly the same spot for each door. So, I made another jig of course! I will definitely be using this method again next time I use this style of hinges. . . . . . #woodworker #woodworking #woodworkingtools #woodworkingtips #maker #makersgonnamake #igwoodworkingcommunity ##howto #shoptime #garagewoodshop #customcutsbychris #woodworkersofinstagram #cabinetbuilder #desmoineswoodworkers #woodworkingjigs
For the garage cabinets I just finished building each door is mounted with 3 euro-style concealed hinges. I wanted a repeatable way to install them on each door without having to measure and mark each hinge location. In my experience doing it that way leaves a lot of room for error and eventually frustration when they don’t align with the mounting plates. This is what I came up with for the hinge side and it worked very well 👌🏻
