One condition in D&D 5e stands in defiance of convention, existing in a bizarre design space within 5E. Over time the strange influence of this condition has harmed the gameplay experience thanks to its inconsistency and redundancy. "Dungeon Masters, how often do you utilize Ability Checks in your games and in what manner? The 5th Edition Player's Handbook advises that a DM call for a check when a character attempts an action that may result in failure. In our experience in various games this isn't always the case, and it's always interesting to see how others run at their tables.

👍 - Rarely, I resolve actions through common sense and narritive description.

💓 - Sometimes, I call for a roll when I'm uncertain about the outcome.

😆 - Often, players roll their ability checks and describe what they wish to accomplish.

D&D Advice: Players who are invested in the DM's worldbuilding are likely to appreciate their character's class featuring in the worldbuilding. A cleric whose religion is aknowledged or a monk that meets others of their tradition will have more hooks into the story, allowing for greater player agency and creativity. Have you ever tried parleying with a monster as an adventurer? It can be more effective than you may imagine! Many monsters have goals and desires behind just murder and may be avoided by appealing to these needs.

One such monster is the Xorn, earth elemental with a hankering for shiny rocks. By providing it with precious stones, one may find themselves past it without a fight, although slightly poorer in the monetary department. In Vol. #1 of the Cosmic Chronicle you can see the Elder Xorn, a paragon of its kind which has been fed a mystical gemstone and gained some nasty powers for it.

OVERCOMING THE HIGH DC OF BREAKING INTO THE TTRPG INDUSTRY, PART 1
⚔️ You love games.
⚔️ You’re creative.
⚔️ You found an error in an official core rulebook.
