Fantastic Beasts 3: The Secrets Are Out
I drove into a very popular local Cinema for the Orlando, FL Media Market Premiere of Fantastic Beasts-3, and except for employees’ autos, the parking lot was empty. Orlando is a top 20 North American Market. I was more than just surprised. The last time I experienced this was for the movie “ETERNALS.” So, my media day began with a genuine sinking feeling although I knew not why. Unlike people who write as critics, a journalists’ job is to report and analyze events. To that end I avoid all pre-release reviews. Without reading them I do post them on some group sites as a way of promoting the work of friends, and while I have had conversations with some of the principal actors and actresses in this Premiere, I do not, and did not in fact ask them about their work. I often ask for the occasional interview, but in that I have a history of sometimes being overtly honesty which makes for poor promotional outcomes, my requests are often met with polite silence. Such is the world of professional media. Out of every 10 requests I get maybe .2 or .3 yeses, and 9.7 Nos! I am now required to explain to my audience why this brilliantly crafted movie/work of art, is about to crash and burn at the box office. Like ETERNALS, I have now discovered that we cannot discuss Fantastic Beasts 3 without discussing homosexuality and political correctness. As a media producer of commercials, and a professional audience analyst, I can only speak to the numbers and audiences in North America. The previous incarnations of Fantastic Beasts had a very strong underlining developing love story between Katherine Waterston’s character, “Tina” and Eddie Redmayne’s character, “Newt.” This love story was one of the primary subjects that moved the story forward in the last two movies. The primary audience for Fantastic Beasts’ had high expectations that this love story would now advance. In what must be one of the most incompetent decisions in the literature history of cinema production; whatever audience arrives to watch this newest incarnation, will discover that Tina and Newt’s love story has been replaced by a very strong underlining homosexual love story between the characters of Grindelwald and Professor Albus Dumbledore. So, what is wrong with that? I can speak only to the statistics. In North America parents are tired, deeply tired of having to correct their children’s perceptions of homosexuality, gender dysphoria and the various other types of Gender Identification Disorders. They are tired of political correctness and having to compete with their children’s teachers and media about morality and other issues of right and wrong. It has now become easier simple to shut down their children’s streaming and movie watching habits. Cutting them off has now become and option for teaching right and wrong. Which in the case of Fantastic Beasts 3 is a complete disaster. Why? Because this movie is an absolute brilliant work of cinematic art. Martin Scorsese wishes he had the skills to execute a work of art like this movie is. The acting is outstanding, and the movie’s pace does not miss a beat anywhere. There are literally no pregnant pauses for stupid anything. The story line keeps viewers on the edge of their seats with twists and turns that leaves them wondering what happens next. As far as Directing, editing, and acting goes it is as flawless as cinema is supposed to be. The participants should be congratulated on a stunning achievement but that will not stop this brilliant work of art from crashing. The original Fantastic Beasts opening weekend, adjust for inflation, was right around $80 million. I hope I am wrong, but this movie will be lucky to make half that. If it does it will be driven by the top five USA media markets. The politically correct forget, when JK Rowling first released Harry Potter; the origin of Fantastic Beasts, large numbers of people rose up against the book(s) because stories of witches were anti-Christian. Millions defended her insisting there was nothing morally or ethically objectionable to Harry Potter. After the last book had been sold, after the last movie was sent to HBO, that is when Rowling decided to announce Albus Dumbledore was a homosexual. Basically, she stabbed all those defenders in the back, and they have never forgotten that betrayal. Outside the top 5 USA markets, the majority of American parents would not want Dumbledore anywhere near their children. If movie production is a business, and that business success is based on audience reach; then why would any rational businessperson put a character like Professor Albus Dumbledore in their production? I am not qualified to be a critic. I am qualified as a researcher and to report my findings. I do not bend the truth to comply with anyone’s belief systems. If I did I would not be a journalist I would be a CNN, NBC, CBS, ABC or MSNBC employee.
