Every life is a gift, a reflection of God's love, and deserves to be cherished and nurtured. This belief reminds us that every child is worthy and blessed regardless of his or her circumstances. Mary Virginia Merrick embodied this truth in the Christ Child Society she founded. Despite her own physical challenges, she dedicated herself to serving children in need, ensuring that each was treated with the dignity and love they deserve.

Father Ruffino Ezama, MCCJ, has a way of turning every stranger into a friend. It's a gift that has made him a beloved figure among the clergy and staff of the Comboni Missionaries in Anderson Township- and far beyond.

Born and raised in Arua, Uganda, Father Ruffino's early life was marked by both inspiration and tragedy. He first met the Comboni Missionaries in his home parish, baptized by Father Jack Rafael Dellagiacoma and confirmed by Msgr. Angelo Tarantino, the first bishop of Aura, and says he was deeply influenced by their examples. The Missionaries were models of charity, helping transform the West Nile region, and young Ruffino loved to serve at Mass.

"The question, in my mind, is not whether we teach our faith, but how do we do so in a way that connects and resonates with our students, setting them up for a lifetime of prayer and engagement," writes Michael Shaffer, the first-year principal at Archbishop Moeller High School, in October's The Final Word. Shaffer taught and was an administrator at Moeller for the past 21 years.

"On Sunday, October 20, the Church will celebrate World Mission Day, a day annually dedicated to supporting the proclamation of the Gospel in places where people have not yet received it or received it only recently. Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, has chosen as the theme for World Mission Day 2024, "Go and invite everyone to the banquet" (cf. Mt. 22:9)," wrote Archbishop Dennis M. Schnurr.

Did you know: The ancient belief that every soul has been appointed an angel to guard it predates the Church and is reflected in the Gospel of Matthew and other New Testament scriptures. The Benedictines fostered devotion to the angels beginning in the 12th century, but the Feast of the Guardian Angels (October 2) was first celebrated by the Franciscans in 1500. Pope V made it a universal feast in 1615.

Did you also know, that the seminary in Mt. Washington is older than its parish? in 1890 St. Gregory Seminary established in Mt. Washington for high school and college men, opening in 1891. In 1892, Guardian Angels Parish organized at the seminary with 45 families, and a small brick church with a prominent bell tower was constructed on the same road. Only three years later in 1895, Guardian Angels school opened in a one-room building.

“Many themes emerge throughout the month of October in the life of the Church. It is Respect Life Month, so we pause to pray more intentionally in thanksgiving to God for the great gift of life and that this gift may always be safeguarded and respected from the first moment of conception until natural death. We also celebrate World Mission Day on the third Sunday of October. This is an opportunity to learn about the continued work of missionaries to spread the Gospel to every corner of the world. Finally, the Church devotes this month to Mary under the title of “Our Lady of the Rosary.” This feast day memorializes the prayers of Christians throughout Europe as they sought Mary’s intercession to protect them from invading forces in the late 16th century. At first, these might seem like disparate themes; however, reflection on the life and example of the Blessed Mother can reveal their underlying unity.", writes Archbishop Dennis M. Schnurr in his September Seek the Lord in The Catholic Telegraph.

Cincinnati Reds' pitcher, Brent Suter, drew great fanfare when he returned to his hometown after playing for the Milwaukee Brewers and Colorado Rockies. Currently in his ninth year with Major League Baseball, the Moeller High School and Harvard University grad finds real joy in playing ball with a "great group of people." And while baseball clearly plays a primary role in Suter's life, his faith takes center stage both on and off the field.

Telling the story of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati since 1831

The Catholic Telegraph is one of the oldest Catholic Publications in the United States. Bishop Fenwick charged The Catholic Telegraph with sharing news with the faithful. Today we are a monthly magazine sharing the living gospel in today’s world, as it has been since 1831.
