Do you enjoy change or does it stop you in your tracks? Think of all the constant changes children go through as they are growing. When your child stumbles, remember the caterpillar and help them find the courage to push through the cocoon. Sometimes reading an old story with easier words helps them to catch their breath. Help build their confidence. When they’re ready to fly, they will. Keep their environment safe during these moments of change. 📸

I unplugged a lot last week while I was on my 40th Anniversary vacay. We traveled to the Bahamas and I seriously didn’t want to come home. I’ll post some pics in my stories in a bit. Seriously such a wonderful way to unplug. My cottage is still my favorite place to unplug but this was definitely my second favorite. Let me also clarify, unplug is different than traveling to visit different locations. My favorite city is by far Amsterdam. Where is your favorite place to unplug?

I don’t know who needs to hear this but it’s ok to enjoy a cup of coffee before you put on your superhero cape and go out into the world every day. Before we help our families and friends, we must take care of ourselves. Btw, I’m a 2 cuppa girl.

At 19 my mother, who had always given me everything, explained to me that she would not be paying for my next semester of college. I had the choice… fold and crumble into tears or pick myself up and go get a loan. I got the loan, I got a job and learned really quick that nothing in life is free. Great lesson. It stung a bit but I’m better for it. What’s a great life lesson you’ve learned?

What’s the best or longest que you’ve ever stood in? I would say my longest time spent in line was probably at a ride for Disney World or Cedar Point. My favorite is probably at Chick-fil-a. Their line management is a one of the natural wonders of the world.

What is something you do for others? I’ll go first… after living away from our girls while we lived in Europe, I’m a firm believer in being a hands on mom and grandma for my family. I’m so thankful I’m 10-30 minutes away from all of my children now and not an ocean away. I also volunteer for CASA. My main focus is my family. And you?

Before I became an author I was lucky enough to teach kindergarten to children when kindergarten was truly kindergarten. The word kindergarten means... a child’s garden. Kindergarten is supposed to be a place where children learn by playing, singing experimenting with art, textiles, sewing, tools, sand, rocks, water and above all, literature. Today’s kindergarten in America is like 1st grade was when I taught 1st grade. Most of the children enter kindergarten knowing all of their letters and some are already reading. This is great but then the schools have removed the play aspect of kindergarten. This social, emotional critical learning that happens through play is now missing. Kids are missing an important aspect to the natural progression of being a child, learning from each other. My call to all educators around the world is to return to our roots. Put the garden back for the child. Let them play to learn. They will learn to read. They will learn to do math and science. But critical learning is learned through holding hands and sharing a graham cracker.
