For a singer from Waco, Texas, it all started with a song he wrote himself.
Hank Thompson was born in 1925 in Waco. His first instrument was the harmonica and later he picked up the guitar. His singing and guitar picking grew more frequent while he was serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II. While still in the Navy he studied electrical engineering at Princeton University and planned to pursue more college when he was discharged; however, he instead became more active in music. While in high school he had performed as "Hank the Hired Hand" on WACO Radio and upon returning from the Navy he got a job singing on KWTX Radio. A local businessman heard him and that resulted in Thompson recording "Whoa Sailor" on a small local label. The song was a solid regional success and in 1947 Tex Ritter helped him get signed by Capitol Records which had nationwide distribution.
Thompson's first record for Capitol hit the charts in January 1948. "Humpty Dumpty Heart" was written by Thompson and climbed to #2 during a 38 week stay on the charts. To understand how a big a hit that was, the Billboard chart only had 15 slots. That means Thompson's record held down a slot on that chart for almost 9 months.
Hank Thompson's band was known as the Brazos Valley Boys. The group was for many years a crack western swing outfit that won "band of the year" honors from Billboard for 14 years.
Hank Thompson placed 79 sides on the Billboard charts from 1948 to 1983. He also had one of the first color tv shows in the nation in the early 1980's in Oklahoma. He pretty much discovered Wanda Jackson and Jean Shepard. And he stayed active to within a month of his death in 2007.
Thompson died in November 2007. He was made a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1989. He brought a professionalism to country music that was rare for the period when his star was on the rise. He was a fine writer, singer, and guitarist. And it all started with a song with a "nursery rhyme" title he wrote himself.

For a singer from Oildale, California, it all started with a song written by another legendary California country singer.
Merle Ronald Haggard was born in 1937 to parents who had come west from Checotah, Oklahoma. His father gained work in the railroad industry and set up a home for the family in an old boxcar. Everything appeared good for the family until the senior Haggard died unexpectedly in 1946. His death had a drastic effect on young Merle.
Merle Haggard began getting in trouble and it culminated with him being to San Quentin Prison in 1958. Haggard got in trouble at first but after seeing a fellow prisoner named "Rabbit" be returned for ex*****on after shooting a policeman, Haggard changed his ways. He also saw Johnny Cash perform at the prison in 1958.
Haggard was released in 1960 and started working on music. He was also digging ditches for his brother...but soon Haggard was a full-time musician. A short tenure with Buck Owens band resulted in Haggard suggesting Buck call his group the "Buckaroos". He also started making records for Tally Records in 1962 starting with a song called "Skid Row". While this record only sold a few hundred, by late 1963 Haggard was on the charts for the first time with "Sing a Sad Song" written by Wynn Stewart. The record rose to #19. Two more records were minor hits and in early 1965 he hit the top 10 with "Strangers". Haggard's version hit the charts two weeks before established hitmaker Roy Drusky's version. Drusky's record went to #6 but Haggard's still made it to #10. His next record came out on the Capitol label and the next 37 records after that were either top 10 or #1.
Merle Haggard is arguably the greatest singer-songwriter country music has ever had. He was also a fine musician and taught himself to play the fiddle due to his love for Bob Wills. He scored 108 charted songs between 1963 and 2008. He stayed active almost to the end and died on his bus (the way he wanted to go) on his 79th birthday. He was named to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1994 and won almost every award in country music. Somewhere, right now, someone is playing one of his songs. It's doubtful we'll ever have another man in country music of the caliber of Merle Haggard. And it all started with a song written by the great Wynn Stewart.

Here is a map of the known burn bans across our Four State Area. Regardless of whether a burn ban is in effect for your County/Parish, outdoor burning is strongly discouraged given the very dry conditions in place. Winds will be gusty today and that could elevate fire weather concerns.
