Getting to know the Elephant
There is an old Buddhist parable about 3 blind men and an elephant. The three men had heard that there was an elephant being brought to town, but none of the men knew the shape or form of this creature. So the men decided that they would go learn about this animal by using their hands to feel the features of the creature. The first blind man walked up and took the elephant by its trunk and he proclaimed to the others “Ah, an elephant is like a snake!”. The next man approached the side of the elephant and after he ran his hands across it said “No, this creature is like a wall, tall and strong”. The last blind man is led to the elephant’s legs and as he touches the animal explains to the other two “No, you are both wrong! An elephant is like a tree, round and rough.”
God is like the elephant, and we are like the blind men, reaching out in the dark trying to understand something that we only have a small piece of. Our aim with this podcast is to talk to more “blind men” (and women) to get a better grasp of the elephant from all of our different perspectives.
