“In the center of Cerignola stood the white domed cathedral, which we saw each time before we flew into battle. Our two dozen plus B-17s would take off from the 353rd Squadron’s. landing strip a few miles to the north. Back at our base, it was a cold and rainy end to 1943 and we were making plans. With a little five fingered ingenuity, we could turn a sack of potatoes into french fries to go with the vino one of ours had gotten by trading ci******es. There was another “volunteered” sack of spuds. With plenty to eat and drink, we sang Auld Lang Syne at midnight, some with tears in their eyes, wondering how many of us would be around for next year New Years. The rest of us counted our missions, knowing we would be home soon.”

“On December 31st, it was cold and raining at our base in Cerignola. We sat inside our warm tents and made plans. Someone had traded something or another - ci******es, I think - with the locals for some vino. One of the airmen on KP had “borrowed” a hundredweight of potatoes, and best of all, one of the pilots “came across” a deep fat frier! We would have wine and hot fried potatoes as the cathedral bells rang in the New Year. Memorial Day, -- Remembering those who died in defense of liberty and freedom while serving this country

“The explosions from the 500-pound bombs blew a number of the large aircraft from different squadrons and most of the airmen in them to bits. There were no survivors among those whose places of duty were adjacent to the bomb bay.
