Of course, PRACTICE is what really gets you to be a speedy editor. Just keep doing it. I've been editing audio in general for almost 20 years and podcasts specifically for nearly 10. I'm MUCH faster now than when I started. You can also be faster! If editing isn't for you, let's chat! bookme.name/jlongworth
Working on an "emergency" edit for a client tonight.
Another slightly obvious one here --- to edit faster, listen at a faster playback speed. I can do this with a few of the shows I work on, but not all of them. If you can catch mistakes listening at 1.5x or 2x, then do it! :D
You know how I said yesterday that keyboard shortcuts were a real game changer, well --- allow me to introduce you to my gamer mouse! I got this 12-button programmable mouse for about $30 on Amazon. Now I can edit one-handed while I hold a cup of coffee in the other hand. Speedy, speedy!

KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS FTW!!! I don't know how I got anything done before programming my keyboard shortcuts. Ripple delete, delete, zoom in/out, multi-track vs waveform, etc. Gotta have them all programmed in to be able to keep my right hand on the mouse and my left hand on the keyboard. Much faster! Tomorrow I'll share was has REALLY upped my speed...
This is one that seems that it would be obvious, but is often overlooked. If you are edited from timestamps, starts at the last and work toward the first. If you edit something in the beginning of the show first, it's going to mess up all of your other timestamps.
Content editing can be time consuming if you are listening through and moving pieces around manually. I recommend using Descript's text-based editor for content editing. Then you can edit the transcript, move chunks around, tweak things here and there and the audio will be edited as well! I don't, personally, use Descript as my primary DAW because I'm a whiz in Audition. But for big content editing jobs, it helps a lot!
Do you use iZotope Rx for audio repair? Are you using batch processing? If you aren't, you should consider it. I throw every show I work on into a standard "pre-wash" in batch processing. Wanna know more, bookme.name/jlongworth
Working on Mary Queen Stories today.
True confession. I didn't use templates until I wrote this presentation. Now it saves time because I don't have to re-create things each time I start a new project. Just open the template and what I need is already in place! Why didn't I do this before?! This goes along with learning your DAW.
Be organized! You don't want to waste time looking for files on your computer. Have things organized in folders and subfolders to be able to easily find what you need.
Which DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) / software should you use to be speedy with editing? The one you are most comfortable in! I've been working in Adobe Audition for a LONG time and am sticking with it because I'm the most comfortable there. I have friends who use Audacity, Reaper, Hindenburg, and others. The DAW you use doesn't make you better, faster, or cooler than anyone else if you don't know how to use it. What DAW do you use?
Over the next few days, I'll be sharing slides from my Podcast Movement presentation - How to Speed Up Your Podcast Editing. :)
