I’d like to discuss, why do you think restaurants are having issues staffing up? I’ve heard because of unemployment benefits, I’m curious to see what happens when they run out.

I think it’s a little deeper then that, perhaps time for to look at the model and change it up a little. I always loved working in hospitality for the great interactions, always changing scenery and fast paced environment. I’m not naïve to the point that for some individuals it’s pretty much all they’ve got. I will say that out of my 15 years in the industry there have only been a handful of employers who looked to build their employees up either through health benefits, saving plans, etc.

Let’s talk about it. Why are restaurants having issues staffing $10-$15 jobs?

As we stare down what seems to be the end of the world. I'd like to say Cheers! to my friends on both sides of the bar. We are all going through our own struggles. The Restaurant industry was devastated 3 weeks ago. I am unsure when or how we will recover from this but I know that we will prevail. As I sit hear writing this "Stand by Me" is playing while we finish Take-Out for the night. Fitting to my hope that we can all do our best to stand together throughout this crisis. We forget sometimes how much we all depend on each other. Now more than ever we need to be physically distant but spiritually and emotionally united. My heart is as I'm sure the rest of you; heavy but I hope to find hope in this experience that we all are sharing.

Be Strong, Be Safe, and Cheers!! to you all. I hope to see you all on both sides of the bar sooner than later.

Please take time to read and help if you can.

If you want to help in the quickest way you can. Please copy and adjust to put your info in the letter below. Check the link provided for proper address and Senator to write to. In this time of crisis this is your opportunity to use your right and ability as a citizen of the United States to drive legislation to help our people. The hospitality industry has been hit harder and faster than anyone else right now. It is impossible to do this alone. We can have a fighting chance if we stand together. We have nothing but time right now. Use it properly. I hope that you not only fill this out and send it off but that you copy and share it with friends and family. They have a voice in the fight for you and out industry as well. Please take the time to exercise your right as an American. If every there was a time this is it for all our hospitality industry friends.

Thank you,

Evan L Vang

P.S.
(I did not write the letter below it was copied)
Feel free to modify as a person that does not work in the service industry as well. We need all the help we can get.

Fill in the blanks:

{ELECTED OFFICIAL}

Hello, my name is {NAME}. I am an employee in the hospitality industry in Southeast Virginia. During these uncertain times of impact with the COVID-19 virus, I am writing on behalf of myself and my teams to inquire as to what actions are being taken to protect our livelihoods. As I am sure you're aware, even in times of economic stability, 78% of American citizens live paycheck to paycheck (Forbes, 2019). I can assure you, these numbers are even higher in the service industry where our income can often very day by day, and is almost entirely dependent on the volume of business that we can bring in.

I understand the need for social distancing and practice of proper measure to do what we can to mitigate the spread of this virus. Unfortunately, my peers and I do not work in an industry in which working from home is viable. Recommendations to offer take out food don't help the fact that a gratuity-dependent workforce will still be suffering a significant, and often catastrophic financial burden. I am asking you to please support legislation for expansion of unemployment funds and accessibility, and to please consider a relief fund for displaced employees. It is a bitter frustration to have the desire but not the ability to work and provide for a household. It is a difficult time to trust in government, but I hope and trust that you will do the right thing for your constituency. Regards,
