In 1962, May 15th was declared by President Kennedy as National Peace Officers Memorial Day, and in addition, May 15th's calendar week to be National Police Week. For 36 consecutive years, a special candlelight vigil takes place to honor the officers who have fallen and whose names have been added to the memorial.

DID YOU KNOW...? Earth Day was started in 1970 by a US Senator in Wisconsin. Since then, the holiday has been adopted by over 190 countries worldwide! This year's theme is Planet vs. Plastics with the goal to reduce plastic production by 60% by 2040 and eventually create a future without plastic!
Our family cuts down on disposable plastic bags use by bringing mesh vegetable bags to the grocery store.

DID YOU KNOW...?
Dandelions are one of the first signs of spring, and as such, they're a beacon for hungry pollinators like honeybees just waking up.
But did you know the entire edible plant is incredibly healthy for you? Believe it or not, they have more vitamin A than spinach, more vitamin C than tomatoes, and are a powerhouse of iron, calcium and potassium. The leaves make amazing greens for salads, the blossoms can be steeped for tea or even made into dandelion jelly and "honey", and the roots can be dried and ground for an alternative to coffee!
Medicinally, fresh and dried, they're used to help kidneys function and detoxify the liver and gallbladder, and the leaves help the body flush out excess fluid, aid digestion, and stimulate appetite.
In fact, they were so well loved and beneficial that through the 1800s people would dig up the grass and plant dandelions in their place! Their sunny blossoms and powerhouse benefits make them a favorite for herbalists and gardeners worldwide.

This time of year, you may see a honeybee or bumblebee on the ground moving slowly. It’s because they’re hungry! We NEED our bees, so here's how to give it a helping hand:
🐝 Offer it some sugar water (2 parts white sugar to 3 parts warm water, or dilute some honey with water) - put a couple drops in front of it so it can grab a snack. If you look carefully, you can see its tongue!
🐝 Provide a water source like a wet sponge; just be careful of their wings
🐝 Put your friend on a flower; they may just need nectar to perk up
Give your friend time to rest up and hopefully it will get what it needs to reenergize and head home!

March 21st is World Down Syndrome day to spread global awareness to signify the uniqueness of the 21st chromosome which causes Down Syndrome. To raise awareness, the idea was created to wear odd and mismatched socks as chromosomes are shaped like socks. Share a photo with us of your wacky socks if you are celebrating with us today!
