Student Outcry Follows Gov. Youngkin’s Announcement as Commencement Speaker

On Monday, April 24, ODU announced the featured speakers for the 138th commencement, which will be on May 5 and 6. The undergraduate ceremony on May 6 will feature Gov. Glenn Youngkin as speaker, and the faculty speaker at the graduate ceremony will be ODU professor Dr. Nina Brown, who has taught at ODU for 55 years...

A Refurbished Ballpark to Call Home in the Near-Future for ODU Baseball

When it opened in 1983, Bud Metheny Ballpark started off as a state-of-the-art facility, but has received major renovations throughout the years since. In 2021, the facility’s shortcomings finally caught up with the ODU baseball program after the Monarchs’ victory over Louisiana Tech in the Conference USA Tournament, where they earned the No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. They then had the opportunity to host the NCAA regional, but were unable to do so because the facility did not meet the NCAA minimum standards....

The Bookbinder: Rewriting The History of a Community

On Monticello Avenue, just across from the zoo and only a few minutes away from the ODU campus, sits a white-bricked square storefront with a bright and welcoming sign that reads “Roullet Bookbinders, inc.” When you pass the front entrance, you’re greeted with glued puzzles dotting the walls and hanging from the ceiling, rows of old-ish books for sale, repurposed church pews in the back corner, and a table of free bibles above a display case of finely re-bound tomes...

History Making Season for Jason Henderson & ODU Football

Finishing the season with a 3-9 (2-6 Sun Belt) record was not the outcome that ODU faithful wanted for the 2022-2023 ODU Football program. There was a lot of buzz throughout the 757 area because the Monarchs had their best home football schedule ever, with multiple in-state foes coming to Norfolk. The Monarchs welcomed the Virginia Tech Hokies to open the season and went on to win the contest 21-17, resulting in thousands of fans flooding the field. ODU met Liberty, James Madison, Georgia Southern, Marshall and Arkansas State at S.B. Ballard field, but the Monarchs finished 2-4 while 1-5 on the road....

Along the ever-bustling traffic of Hampton Blvd. and just a few streets down from Old Dominion University sits a chain link fence cordoning off a construction site. The fence is plastered with posters labeling the site as “The Railyard at Lambert’s Point.” The tops of buildings are just visible from the street. Stay Safe: Norfolk Ranks Among America’s Top Ten Highest STD Rates

Utilizing the Center For Disease Control’s 2023 STD Surveillance Statistics, Innerbody’s team compiled a list of one-hundred cities with the highest STI/STD rates. Norfolk, in particular, had 1,069 reported cases for every 100,000 citizens with infections like gonorrhea, HIV, chlamydia, and syphilis. The study also noted that Norfolk rose nineteen places since last year’s rankings, continuing an upward trend for the city...

New Playwrights Festival Debuts Works Created by ODU Students🎬

ODU Triumphs Over Marshall Twice in Three-Game Series

As the weather starts to warm up in the 757 and baseball season gets into full swing, ODU baseball took on the Marshall Thundering Herd in a three-game series on March 24-26. This three-game series is the Monarch’s second series in Sun Belt play, where they look to place themselves atop the Sun Belt leaderboard. Entering this series, ODU’s record stood at 18-3, 3-0 in the Sun Belt, while Marshall stood at 10-8 and 1-2 in the Sun Belt respectively....

ODU Baseball Defeated Against Liberty 9-5; Hosts Marshall This Weekend

It was too little, too late for the Monarchs baseball team to overcome a 6-0 run deficit and they dropped their mid-week matchup against Liberty University 9-5. After sweeping Louisiana Monroe last weekend, ODU 18-3 (3-0 Sun Belt) returned home with six straight wins for their first home-and-home matchup against the Flames 9-11 (1-2 ASUN) this season. Later in the season (May 3), these two teams will meet again in Lynchburg, VA for the second matchup of the home-and-home series.....

Monarchs Baseball Sweep Louisiana Monroe in Opening Sun Belt Weekend Series

In its first weekend of Sun Belt Conference play, the Old Dominion Monarchs Baseball team traveled down to the University of Louisiana Monroe 7-14 (0-3 Sun Belt) for a three-game conference series. ODU earned the series sweep over the Warhawks and improved their record to 18-2 (3-0 Sun Belt). The Monarchs came into the weekend on a three-game winning streak after earning a win over Charlotte and dominating Princeton in a pair of games earlier in the week.

Biden’s Administration Just Gave Norfolk A $1.6 Million Grant to Address Racial Inequality

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg recently announced a complete list of federal grants that “will address infrastructure barriers that limit mobility, access, or economic development for communities across the country.” From the “Reconnecting Communities Program,” Virginia received a total of $2.95 million in grant-based funding that will be awarded between the cities of Richmond and Norfolk. The state’s capital will secure $250,000 less than Norfolk....
