A Refurbished Ballpark to Call Home in the Near-Future for ODU Baseball

When it opened in 1983, Bud Metheny Ballpark started off as a state-of-the-art facility, but has received major renovations throughout the years since. In 2021, the facility’s shortcomings finally caught up with the ODU baseball program after the Monarchs’ victory over Louisiana Tech in the Conference USA Tournament, where they earned the No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. They then had the opportunity to host the NCAA regional, but were unable to do so because the facility did not meet the NCAA minimum standards....

The Bookbinder: Rewriting The History of a Community

On Monticello Avenue, just across from the zoo and only a few minutes away from the ODU campus, sits a white-bricked square storefront with a bright and welcoming sign that reads “Roullet Bookbinders, inc.” When you pass the front entrance, you’re greeted with glued puzzles dotting the walls and hanging from the ceiling, rows of old-ish books for sale, repurposed church pews in the back corner, and a table of free bibles above a display case of finely re-bound tomes...

Face at the Mace: Sydney Haulenbeek

Disclaimer: For legal reasons, this article is satirical and is NOT meant to be taken seriously.

Sydney, as normal as she tries to be, is as much of an anomaly as anybody else in the Mace and Crown. Sure, she might not give off the vibe of an introvert conspiring their plan for world domination but… actually no, I take that back. World domination would fit Sydney’s agenda but probably only after she gets to see BTS in concert. Who knows, maybe NOT seeing them in concert would be the final straw? Regardless, Sydney has to take the mantle of being the person organizing a mixed group of organized individuals and procrastinating powder kegs. Yes, the latter most definitely includes me...

When Brushstrokes Are Traded for Keystrokes, Is It Still Art?

Artificial intelligence has always been a trending topic in both the tech world and in popular culture. The concept of machines learning to think, perform, and speak like a human–or better–is awe-inspiring and controversial....

Monarchs Baseball Drop Series Against Challenging #17 Coastal Carolina Team

It was quite the weekend at Bud Metheny Ballpark as the ODU baseball team hosted the 17th-ranked Coastal Carolina Chanticleers in a Sun Belt series clash among two of the top four teams in the conference. Coming off a defeat against No. 9 East Carolina on the road earlier in the week, the Monarchs stood at 23-9 (8-4 Sun Belt), while Coastal came into the series with a 21-10 (9-3 Sun Belt) record...

Monarchs Drop Weekend Series 2-1 Against Southern Miss

Monarch baseball returned to town as they took on the Southern Mississippi Eagles for what was initially scheduled to be a Thursday, Friday, and Saturday series on April 6-8. The monsoons of Norfolk, however, had different plans on Friday and the contest was rained out. The series was conducted with a game on Thursday and then a doubleheader on Saturday, April 8. ..

History Making Season for Jason Henderson & ODU Football

Finishing the season with a 3-9 (2-6 Sun Belt) record was not the outcome that ODU faithful wanted for the 2022-2023 ODU Football program. There was a lot of buzz throughout the 757 area because the Monarchs had their best home football schedule ever, with multiple in-state foes coming to Norfolk. The Monarchs welcomed the Virginia Tech Hokies to open the season and went on to win the contest 21-17, resulting in thousands of fans flooding the field. ODU met Liberty, James Madison, Georgia Southern, Marshall and Arkansas State at S.B. Ballard field, but the Monarchs finished 2-4 while 1-5 on the road....

Eight Blocks from ODU, a Community Center is Being Built

Along the ever-bustling traffic of Hampton Blvd. and just a few streets down from Old Dominion University sits a chain link fence cordoning off a construction site. The fence is plastered with posters labeling the site as “The Railyard at Lambert’s Point.” The tops of buildings are just visible from the street. Questions have begun circulating about this fence and what hides behind it at Hampton Blvd. and W 26th St....

Stay Safe: Norfolk Ranks Among America’s Top Ten Highest STD Rates

Utilizing the Center For Disease Control’s 2023 STD Surveillance Statistics, Innerbody’s team compiled a list of one-hundred cities with the highest STI/STD rates. Norfolk, in particular, had 1,069 reported cases for every 100,000 citizens with infections like gonorrhea, HIV, chlamydia, and syphilis. The study also noted that Norfolk rose nineteen places since last year’s rankings, continuing an upward trend for the city...

Face at the Mace: Leyda RosarioRivera

Many editor teams have managing editors. Only one of them (ours) has Leyda. When the team first met Leyda, we noticed she was more of an introvert than anything else, but being an introvert has its perks. First of all, you can decide how much to open up, and if you’re resilient enough, your privacy will be thoroughly protected. Second, your sudden “friendly” workplace bullying of a certain section editor will carry four times more weight than if anybody else on the staff said it....

As the weather starts to warm up in the 757 and baseball season gets into full swing, ODU baseball took on the Marshall Thundering Herd in a three-game series on March 24-26. ODU Kills Graduation Ceremony Rumors

Weeks ago, many students feared that they’d no longer be walking the University seal and would only hear their names read among the graduating class. Spotify Released an AI-Powered DJ

Can you imagine opening Spotify to satisfy your musical itch, only to be interrupted by an AI DJ named Xavier? Thankfully, you may not have to, because the AI DJ is an official feature released by Spotify for their Premium listeners. Instead of fixing the infamous shuffle feature, the people at Spotify figured that the more pressing matter was to introduce a personal AI disc jockey that plays songs you like, trending songs from different genres, and even recommend songs to you. It’s an interesting concept, but is it really as promising as it sounds?...

ODU Baseball Defeated Against Liberty 9-5; Hosts Marshall This Weekend

It was too little, too late for the Monarchs baseball team to overcome a 6-0 run deficit and they dropped their mid-week matchup against Liberty University 9-5. After sweeping Louisiana Monroe last weekend, ODU 18-3 (3-0 Sun Belt) returned home with six straight wins for their first home-and-home matchup against the Flames 9-11 (1-2 ASUN) this season. Later in the season (May 3), these two teams will meet again in Lynchburg, VA for the second matchup of the home-and-home series.....

Monarchs Baseball Sweep Louisiana Monroe in Opening Sun Belt Weekend Series

In its first weekend of Sun Belt Conference play, the Old Dominion Monarchs Baseball team traveled down to the University of Louisiana Monroe 7-14 (0-3 Sun Belt) for a three-game conference series. ODU earned the series sweep over the Warhawks and improved their record to 18-2 (3-0 Sun Belt). Behind the Scenes: The Costume Design of “Artemis, I”

“Artemis, I,” produced by the ODU Theatre in the spring of 2023, was a contemporary take on the story of Iphigenia, and nowhere was this more evident than the costume designs. Biden’s Administration Just Gave Norfolk A $1.6 Million Grant to Address Racial Inequality

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg recently announced a complete list of federal grants that “will address infrastructure barriers that limit mobility, access, or economic development for communities across the country.” From the “Reconnecting Communities Program,” Virginia received a total of $2.95 million in grant-based funding that will be awarded between the cities of Richmond and Norfolk.
