“This is the largest Simply Smyrna Celebration we have ever had,” said Ron Alley, CEO and Founder, Carpe Artista. “We have 120 vendors. This year we partnered with Nashville Young Entrepreneurs.”

Behind the 101 Front Street building, members of the Nashville Young Entrepreneurs had booths offering many handmade items, including hot sauce developed by Oliver Hudson and photography by Micah Bailey. The kids were partnered with their proud parents.

Also added this year, were dancers from the Steve Cate’s International Folk Fest. Their performance in front of The English Store started with singing and dancing by a group visiting from the United Kingdom. There were also dancers from the Czech Republic and Mexico. Cripple Creek Cloggers finished off the set.

Being a music festival sponsored by Carpe Artista, there was lots and lots of music. Stages could be found in multiple locations, including in front of Carpe Cafe, in the railroad station, behind the Carpe Artista building and in the Smyrna Community Hall.

“We had more sponsors this year, also,” added Alley. “And we thank them all for their support as we continue to grow while promoting the Depot District and giving Carpe Artista students, teachers and their friends an opportunity to perform.”

Isaiah 117 House is an organization that helps when children are removed from their homes out of concern for their welfare. Kids in this situation are usually brought to the Department of Children’s Services Offices to await placement with a foster family. This wait can be several hours to nearly a full day. These children often have nothing with them and are scared, lonely, hungry and often in dirty clothing.

Recently, Isaiah 117 Houses across the country encouraged their communities to hold lemonade stands to raise awareness and funds for their location. The Rutherford County Isaiah 117 House partnered with several businesses for this year’s Lemonade Challenge. Businesses, churches, neighborhoods, families and children all over our community joined in and held 41 stands to raise awareness about the mission of Isaiah 117. They had over 700 visitors at these stands and raised over $22,000 to benefit the Rutherford County House.

Murfreesboro City Schools recently celebrated the $2.8 million new addition to Reeves Rogers Elementary with a community ground breaking for the school. This project adds 4,000 square feet to the building - providing much needed office space, a new nurse’s station, parent-conference room and more! The building was built in 1959, and students and staff alike are excited about the new additions to an already great school.

“This new administrative addition is going to be excellent for the school,” says Dr. Trey Duke, Director of Schools. “What this addition is doing - is it’s going to help provide spaces for things that maybe we weren’t doing in education back in 1959…. Also it’s going to greatly enhance the safety of the building …. We’re very excited for it.”

Story and Photography by Eric Lusk
Photographed Germayle, Germayla and Mylikya Franklin

Mylikya and Germayle Franklin are busy people. Over the past several years, they’ve been single-handedly making Murfreesboro a better place to live. Not only have they been running their own business, but they’ve also organized multiple events, including the 3rd Annual Murfreesboro Hot Chicken Festival presented by Middle Tennessee Electric.

Dozens of vendors selling everything from clothes and jewelry to crafts and other hand-made curios were set up around the city’s historic courthouse. There were even bounce houses and other activities for the kids.

The main event was, of course, hot chicken. The lines at the food trucks were long. The competition was fierce. But at the end, the judges deemed Most Creative: Pink Sugar Funnel Cakery; Best In The Boro: Lily's Hot Chicken; Hottest of The Hot: (tied) Creative Culinary Creations & Bill's Hot Fish and Chicken; and People's Choice: Southern Spoon!

First Community Mortgage

Both of Rob LaLance’s mentors, David Prince and Chris Meagher, have told him that having a great team is the key to giving clients a good experience. He feels blessed to be a part of an amazing team with the best processors in the business, Candace Johnson and Crystal Richards, as well as a fantastic Loan Officer Assistant, Stephanie Calhoun.

“Those three make sure our clients get exceptional service throughout the entire loan process,” said LaLance. “It's nice to have people like David and Chris who took me in and made me a part of their branch here at FCM. Being partnered with the best builder in the state, Ole South has been a blessing beyond measure."

One of LaLance’s main focuses is keeping his clients’ stress levels low so he can provide a great experience for them when buying a home. Buying a home is typically the biggest purchase people make in their lives, and for that reason there is lots of stress associated with the process.

It is also one of the most important steps to building wealth, especially for young people. LaLance is seeing more and more young people wanting to rent, even when they qualify for a home. It's much better to slowly pay off your own mortgage, while your home appreciates than paying off someone else's mortgage for them while renting.

“This is my first job out of college,” added Lalance, “and I haven't imagined doing anything else since I started several years ago. The constant changes of the industry, as well as the feeling you get when you help someone purchase their home, will always keep this job interesting.”

How do two ladies from Woodbury, Tabitha King and Katelyn Seng, get together with another, Melanie Harper, who grew up in Southern California, to start a business?
“We all had various jobs before getting into title insurance,” said Tabitha King, “but we all share a love for the history of title and experiencing happy customers at closings. Not typically an industry that you seek out, it is more one that you fall into. We all knew someone in it.”

Authority Title and Escrow is a woman owned business with a combined experience of 40 years. They offer title insurance and real estate closings. The team is very passionate about what they do, and they have mastered every facet of a real estate transaction. “We handle residential, commercial, investor, 1031 Exchanges and much more,” added Harper.

They build and maintain strong relationships with their staff, those in the real estate industry, and with their clients through trust and open communication.
“It's about more than just the closing to us,” said Seng, “it's about the relationship. We love getting to know our agents and customers outside of the closing table.”
A home is one of the largest financial transactions anyone will ever make, why wouldn't a home owner take every precaution to protect it. Their business is protecting the title for their clients’ property from unknown defects.

Super involved in the community, they support a number of non-profits, including Domestic Violence Center, Isaiah 117 House and local sports teams, to just to name a few.

Serving Tennessee, Alabama and Kentucky, Authority Title has grown from three ladies with a dream to a reality that has truly exceeded their expectations!

“Growing up lower middle class,” said Scott Flowers, “I truly know how it is to not have options when it comes to finances. I wanted to change the conversation with my son. I didn't want to say we can't afford something. I simply wanted to ask the question, is that the smartest decision for our money.”

He takes the same approach with his clients. He challenges them to save more and make some sacrifices to help reach their financial goals.

“Money can be a measuring tool for how well one makes crucial decisions in life,” said Flowers. “I want my clients to make the best decisions they can when they are faced with those crucial decision. Helping a client reach a long-awaited goal is one of the most rewarding experiences of my career.”

Flowers has always worked in financial services. He loves helping clients reach their financial goals and independence. He helps through retirement planning, investment management and insurance services.

According to Flowers, the three most important things someone should consider before investing their money are, first to look at their investment savings as a non-negotiable bill, second to live modestly and third to invest for the long term and not for the short term when looking at retirement goals, even when markets are volatile and irrational.

“Many self-made millionaires drive around in very modest cars,” said Flowers. “Material things are not a measure of wealth. Financial independence is a measure of financial wealth.”

A native of Dyersburg, Tennessee, he moved to Murfreesboro after receiving a Bachelors of Business Administration from Middle Tennessee State University.

An International Folkfest recently made a stop in our neck of the woods at Cedar Glade Brews in Murfreesboro. On an absolutely gorgeous Friday evening, multiple dance and music troupes from three different countries performed their traditional folk dances and songs.

To enhance the festivities, partner Jonathan Harmon and the crew at Cedar Glade released a traditional style beer from each country! Harmon added, “…we brewed enough to give each performer one of each. Then we threw in one of our beers. Specifically, we included one of our signature Berliners that features prickly pear, which is indigenous to Cedar Glades. So it was a unity of the three troupes and Cedar Glade - which is exactly what we experienced on this night.”
