The North Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating after a Mercer County Deputy died following a vehicle pursuit.
According to a press release received just after 5 a.m. Dec. 7 from NDHP Lt. Dan Haugen, Mercer County Deputies located a 2017 Black Chevy Tahoe in Hazen that was reported missing Dec. 6 by the Bismarck Police Department during.
It was reported the stolen vehicle was driven by 42-year-old Ian Cramer of Bismarck.
“When law enforcement approached Cramer, he fled in the vehicle and a pursuit ensued,” Hauen stated in the release. “During the pursuit, the vehicle Cramer was driving veered and crashed head-on into an unoccupied Mercer County Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicle that was parked on the roadside approach.”
The release noted the deputy’s vehicle was displaying its emergency lights at the time of the crash. A Mercer County deputy was preparing to deploy a tire deflation device in an attempt to end the pursuit.
“A Mercer County deputy was standing outside and behind the patrol vehicle when it was struck,” Haugen continued. “The impact of the crash pushed the patrol vehicle into the deputy, killing him.”
Haugen stated Cramer was taken into custody, transported to the Sakakawea Medical Center in Hazen and then taken to the McLean County Detention Center in Washburn.
The Mercer County Deputy killed in the incident has been identified as Paul Martin, 53, Beulah. Deputy Martin was an 18-year veteran with the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office and is survived by his wife and three children.
