The SFWA Career Mentorship Program is now taking applications for mentors and mentees, and you do not need to be a SFWA member to apply! The three-month-long mentorships will run January 10–April 10, 2023.
This all-volunteer service is provided free of charge. We aim to connect emerging writers with each other and established professionals for community, knowledge sharing, and networking opportunities. This endeavor is focused on professional development rather than artistic development.
Conferences, panels, and other events are useful tools for building relationships in the speculative fiction genre community, but they aren’t the best opportunities to ask someone on how they got to where they are in their career, or how they negotiated their agent's retirement, or how they handle parenthood and deadlines. This mentorship program gives participants the opportunity to have those conversations.
For mentors, this is a great chance to pass on knowledge in a structured, supported, and finite setting. They will be able to set parameters for preferred topics and communication methods. They may help mentees understand the agent process, offer tips and tricks to get a project moving again, or poke a toe into a new subgenre or publication path. We should note that providing critique is not an expectation.
From a past mentor: “I didn’t think I’d amassed much expertise in publishing, but I took the jump anyhow. I was surprised by how much help I could give my mentee with book tours and social media, which had the bonus of giving me more confidence about my career accomplishments.”
For mentees, this is a chance to pick the brains of someone who is a couple of rungs ahead on the ladder, or at a similar career point but with a different expertise. Career, not craft, is the focus here.
From a past mentee: “I am back on track with consistent output for my novel…she gave me lots of productivity hacks that I'll be able to use for future projects, she gave me peace of mind about my current situation with my agent and more!”
The mentorship initiative is open to SFWA members and nonmembers, whether in a mentee or mentor role. Please share this with other creators who would benefit from the program—especially established professionals who have a wealth of knowledge to share with earlier career writers.
Applications are open and will remain open until 12:00pm Eastern Time on Wednesday November 30. All applicants must be 21 or older to participate. After the application period is over, we will use a lottery system to select participants and will make matches over the month of December. Due to high demand, we ask that if you have had a successful match as a mentee in one of the previous matching rounds, you don't apply again in this round.
