Saltwater fishing tackle has come a long way in recent years. It seems like only yesterday that PENN, Shakespeare, Pfluger and Garcia were at the top of the list when it came to finding top fishing reels. When trolling either offshore or nearshore there are a few factors that are imperative to success. First is speed, with 5-7 knots considered as the best range. The characteristic of the baits you’re using will also be a factor.

Recently we sat down with Russell Weaver of Blue Water Candy Lures. Russell is our “go to guy” when it comes to trolling the Coastal Carolina waters. We wanted to get his thoughts on the basics of trolling. While his comments are extremely helpful and there were a number of specific ways we need...

It requires the use of boats that are specifically built for the extremely shallow water and the way you fish the flats requires a number....

Some days, fishing is just tough. Friday was one of those days. Brody (the amazing fish-finding and stock-trading dog) had an appointment with the veterinarian. We’re going to discuss inshore fishing rather than offshore. Most of what we’re going to be talking about, you may already know, but we have some information you might have missed and find useful and interesting.

Unless you have one of those big sportfishing boats or a go-fast boat that can take you to the gulf stream before you can finish drinking your first Sundrop of the day, you’re probably an inshore angler. However, there are a respectable number of anglers that have boats that can take them safely o...

In May, our focus will be offshore with mahi and marlin as our target species. This requires us to prepare two sets of trolling tackle:

With my dog Brody still in a head cone and not allowed on the boat, I cannot bring myself to go fishing without him. Brody knows my routine. When I put on sunscreen, sunglasses, buff, and a hat, he knows I am going fishing. So, Brody runs to the backdoor and blocks me from leaving […]

Sargasso grass is home to over 100 plus species of marine life and is critical to the life history and survivability of many species targeted by blue water fishermen/divers. .

There is nothing that excites the offshore angler more than to encounter the patches of pure gold– a grass line, sitting on blue water. Absolutely, more valuable than 24-carat currency. Yes, this is the basics of blue water life offshore where current boundaries, upwelling’s, and the meanderings...

Warmer weather is here and Speckled Trout spawning is coming as well. This is the time of year female Trout are more aggressive. That behavior change is driven by factors such as increased hunger, as well protecting their roe from predators. Changes in their environment mean changes in the way I fis...

With the hotter days of summer here, the fishing has slowed down. This is largely due to the hot water. As the water warms, anglers will commonly head for the cooler deeper water to find fish. While this is a good tactic, it can result in finding many of these spots to be overfished or […]

Boaters and fishermen in the southeast have many interesting encounters in our offshore adventures. Great advise from the fishing guru, Capt. Lee Parsons on successful Bonito fishing.

For the past several years, I make my annual pilgrimage to the guru of Bonito fishing off the Carolina Coast to Captain Lee Parsons of Wrightsville Beach. This seminar VIDEO by Carolina Beach, North Carolina’s Captain Dennis Barbour will show how sight fishing is a fun way to put a “SPIN” on your next fishing trip.

Trolling for Spanish Mackerel and Bluefish can be great fun, but if you really want to have a great time, change it up and start sight casting for them. Sight fishing a fun way to put a “SPIN” on your next fishing trip. It’s on light tackle and that can only mean a more exciting […]

The development of the SHAC was driven by the desire of a family to make boating safer, and any beachgoer enjoying the sandy shores. The project demonstrated character, determination, teamwork, and vision.

A couple of weeks ago I received an email from a gentleman in Durham, NC, by the name of Jay Harris. He was introducing me to a new concept in shore anchors for boats. I decided to take a closer look at the company’s website since we at Saltwater Angler & Sportsman are forever looking […]

Our Story

Captain Tim Wilson has enjoyed the marine industry from over 20 years. During the mid 1990’s he ran fishing charters out of Wrightsville Beach and Carolina Beach and was one of the few light tackle fishing guides in the area at the time. During that same time he worked as a tackle sales representative and the regional editor of “Sportfishing Report Magazine”. Beginning in 2001 he joined Sea Tow Services International where eventually rose to the position of VP of Franchise Development and Sales. While at Sea Tow, Tim also served as contributing writers to publications such as “Boating World” and “Lifelines”. His career enabled him to travel and fish many of the nation’s greatest fishing spots like fishing for reds in Venice, Louisiana, tarpon in the Florida Keys or giant blues off of Long Island, New York.

Tim recently commented….”I’ve enjoyed my fishing history and loved seeing the evolution of the sport in the Carolinas and Georgia coast. Most of all I’ve enjoyed meeting all the great people and thank them for allowing me to be a part of their fishing legacy”.

Our online magazine has many contributing writers and pro anglers that share “how to” tips as well as their fishing adventures. We provide online seminars, podcasts and additional videos. We encourage our viewers to send pictures of their catch along with a brief description to be shared on our Facebook.
